We lost a silver black blanketed appaloosa filly yesterday and a silver black appaloosa colt today. Both a month early. Yesterdays was a dystocia-the mare was a maiden but she is doing very well. The filly had one foot forward and she came out easily but we couldn't revive her. The vet said the mare had plenty of room for the birth and maneuvering and she had no internal damage.
The one today was an older experienced broodmare who had a red bag birth. She had the colt quickly and easily but his cord was twisted around him and despite my efforts I could not get him breathing. He was perfectly formed but too early.
A sad start to foaling season, but I am VERY thankful that it wasn't worse. The mares are doing great so far.
We have a few more foals due-but not until april. Please send prayers for the rest of our mares.
On a brighter note, my iowas little kernel son that i've been having trouble keeping weight on is very fat and sassy even after our bad winter. It was warmer today so i let him outside and he was full of energy
Maybe i'll still get my little buckskin filly from him.
