I want to start some bamboo. I have the clumping kind. I know I can split open the tub it is in and divide it if I want but can I take cutting and start it? I want to plant lots of it in big tubs all around the fence line. I want to hide from all the neighbors that are cropping up all over. I want to be secluded. I want to hide

: I want to live in my own little world :bgrin

Anyhow if I can do cuttings can you tell me how.

Well check for replies in the morning I'm going to hit the hay now :saludando:

Whatever you do, do NOT plant it outside the tubs- it will not just be the neighbours you can't see it you do, it will take over and you will have a jungle!!!

It is also quite dangerous- one of my Dobes had a sliver drive into her paw- BIG Vets bill!!!

Jane,

Clumping type Bamboo doesn't really run. I had it 8 years at my old place and it didn't go any where. Was honestly hoping it would run a bit just a little bit. Ah well..

Some of the Clumping Bamboo are quite fragile too. The new shoots are also fragile, break easily and are rather soft.

Have a bit of it here in a pot and do plan to plant it out at some point. Now that I know it really doesn't go any where.

Now I agree with you with the Running kind...those are a mother bear to deal with.

There are 2000+ different types of bamboo.. and there are some mellow ones out there.

Yes Rabbit tubs only

We have a wild kind of Pampas grass around here that has taken over in the open areas.

Once I got some at the nursery and one of my neighbores was a bit upset with me.

The kind I got has never spread. Broom is getting to be bad also and some kind of ivy that is climbing up all the Redwood and spuce trees.

Back to the bamboo now... anyone know if cuttings for the clumping kind will work?

Well, to make REALLY sure that it thrives, dig it up, burn it, bury it and then burn it again. If there are any pieces left throw a tactical nuke on it and man will it ever just grow and grow and GROW!!!!!!

Seriously, even a little piece of a bulb will seem to have a life of its own, sprout and will thrive. We dozen a huge section a few years ago, burned piles and piles of it and are still dealing with the little **%&$^s

I am going to go out and take a picture of my bamboo and maybe someone can tell me for sure what kind it is. Back in a bit.

I had clumping bamboo that just plain took over!!! I must of had the "MOTHER BEAR" type you talked about :bgrin It was so hard to get rid of and the 3 main plants Bob actaully had to go down with the backhoe to really get at the roots. Even after that we had shoots coming up for the next couple of years. As for dividing it..all I ever did was pulled out a few shoots and gave them to friends (slips of mine were great to give to those friends you really didnt like

: :bgrin ) and within no time it was over running there yards too. It is very pretty when it "blooms" but then I had a million and one bees to content with. Mine was a no win situation! Good luck. Corinne

lovely............I like bamboo and there are tricks to containing it...anyway...

To create more you can divide the clump in 1/2 and repot....might need an axe to split the clump through the roots..........

Bamboo is actually grass so to do starts you need to cut a tuber/root and plant that..............actually the term is corms.......anyway in the spring you can see as the new shoots come up dig the dirt away and look closely at what the shoot is growing from that will be the root/corm you want to cut and plant..............

I have some excellent websites at home saved in my files that deal with bamboo.........if your interested let me know and I can post them tonite.

JO,

That is pretty Bamboo. But I honestly could not tell you what type.

Until Runamuck can dig up hers..

Here are a couple of good links to check out. More than likely they will be able to tell you what type you have.

Here is a picture of one of mine... in a pot.

Left side is a slow growing running type,, it didn't do much either at the old place and to the right,, the clumping Bamboo that didn't grow a stitch.

Well I guess I am just going to bust open that barrel that mine are in and divide it up, I just hate to ruin the barrel. The bamboo is so crowded I don't think I can cut any out and not ruin the barrel. Oh well I guess in the long run the bamboo should come out of that barrel anyway since it is so crowded

Jo,

Do you have someone that can help you roll the barrel onto its side... and then help you pull the Bamboo out?

It might work that way and then you do not have to break up the barrel.

Oh I have no trouble moving the barrel around, its just that the bambo roots are so packed in that they are kind of gown into the small slits in between the slats :new_shocked:

Oh well the rain has started again after 2 days of nice sun so I'm not even going to think about it until the next nice day, then I'm gonna get out the maul and go for it.

Before you get the maul out....do you have a machete? You could run it around the inside of the barrel like cutting loose a cake then try to pry it out with a shovel.......those barrels are nice and spendy no need to wreck it if we can find a solution
default_wink.png
: also turning it on its side and rolling it may loosen it up enough to get the clump out without wrecking the barrel..........

The websites shari posted are a couple of the ones I have if you want more let me know.........

default_yes.gif
