Question for all those folks that live in Eastern VA. (Near King George County)

What Bank do you use? Do you like that Bank?

Any costs?

Needless to say I am shopping for a good solid bank over that way and none of the names I have come across are familiar to me.

Shari!!! Are you moving to my neck of the woods? I live in Spotsylvania (near "Mine Run" and Orange county). King George is kind of on the other side of Fredericksburg from me but I think from both locations, Fredericksburg is the biggest "city" closeby.

I love my bank, but it's not probably going to be convenient to you. I bank with The Fauquier Bank. Their closest offices to my house are in Bealeton, VA, but they have two offices in the town where my office is (Warrenton). I don't pay any fees for my checking account, but I think there may be a fee if I want a cashier's check. Sometimes ATM fees depending on the bank I'm using an ATM through.

This bank, their customer service is OUTSTANDING. I keep one of my corporate accounts with them and also my parents' personal accounts. I worked for this bank until the mid-90's as a mortgage loan officer and that's why I initially had accounts with them, but I kept them there because of the great customer service -- even today when nearly everyone I used to work with at the bank is no longer at the bank.

They have a website you can pull your accounts up on for free (use it all the time) and an automated 800 number too where you can track your account if you don't like to do it online. When I worked for them, their charter was as a National bank but they changed that status to State about the time I decided to do what I do now (and in turn grow my bank account ha-ha... at least back then, banks do not pay well especially when compared to the amount of responsibility / demands put on the employees and officers).

Yup,, heading that way. Husband just arrived in VA yesterday, he found a tiny studio Apartment in Montross. He will be working in Dahlgren.

Next weekend he will start looking at places for us. I would prefer to find a place to live over there as soon as possible, well at least before winter.

Will either Rent, IF I can find a place that would suit the horses and indoor cats. Or see if the Banks will allow us another Mortgage (until this place sells), way things are now a days, I have no idea.

Thank you very much for the info on Fauquier Bank. Will check it out. Hear you about the jobs, seems like the only place to get a fair wage job right now is on the East coast.

Here are a few large banks, offering checking, saavings, loans, mortgages, etc.

BB&T

Bank of America

Suntrust

Wachovia

I'd suggest you look at their sites and see the branches, services, offerings, etc. All of these have online, ATM, & physical sites. Many have ATMs in such places as grocery stores, or even some small branches within such stores. Their fees, etc. will be listed. I currently use BB&T, & Suntrust........my mtg is now held by Bank of America as they obtained Countrywide.....have used Wachovia in past. I have found all of them to be equitable.

The best thing, IMO, is to find a good credit union in the area, once you arrive and can shop. Until then, these banks will offer as many services a you need. Also, they have many branches up & down the E Coast. I'm in Franklin, which is about 50 miles from Virginia Beach and about 125 from Fredricksburg. I know that I will find a branch if/when traveling.

You'll find VA pretty nice. Weather, sites to visit, mountains to ocean in one day

, lots of history things, good State Fair, etc. Plus Dahlgreen is just a stones throw from MD....short distance to DC, etc.

That is one thing I miss.. is the History. Oregon, while very beautiful and I really love it here, doesn't have much in the way of history or the wonderful county fairs they have on the East coast. They do have Fairs in Oregon but they are not the same as the ones on the East coast.

OK.. well ...we used to go to those fairs when we lived in NH, also went to the ones in VT and Maine. Oh and Draft horse and Oxen pulls. Do they have those in VA?

Husband says it is very beautiful country. Looks a lot like Oregon.

We do have a Navy Federal Credit Union account but they can be a pain to deal with at times. Do want a bank big enough that if we travel around the East coast, there will be branches to use.

Not many oxen but drafts, yes. Several past president houses, civil war battle grounds, etc....DC has capital, Smithsonian....northern VA is home to some of best horse farms in the USA...NJ used to have Olympics Team farm (probably still does

) and the entire area has many, many County Fairs, "local" annual events, etc. Lexington VA has a really nice horse event center. Jamestown and Williamburg are not far from you....ahahhhh, history AND shopping

NJ & DE have casinos.

Weather is seasonal but not severe for most part. Gardening is good with rich soil. I love VA. The more I hear about the tragic events across the country, the more I love it!

Welcome!

Thank you Bess, you are making me feel a lot better about moving to VA. All I have to do is wait for husband to have the time on the weekends to do property shopping!

Am not much of a city person, hate driving in them but I do want to go to the Smithsonian some time. Oh and Williamsburg and... well.. lots of places.

Shari, good luck in VA. I think you'll love it there. My sister lives there. We've done Civil War re-enactments, have visited many historic places and gone to many fairs in the past. The scenery is just breath takingly beautiful. We have many fond memories in VA.
