Best cures for the runs, suggestions please.

I posted about our rescue mare, Annie. We recieved many suggestions, thank you.

Without reinterating diet, vet findings, her health in other aspects. Meds and such. What are some good anti-diahreals?

Also, has anyone tried Triple Crown Safe Starch, which I have read can be used as a creep feed. Please, comments welcome.

Vet comes Monday, suggestions in the meantime?

When my colt had the runs a few weeks ago, (after he choked & was in the hospital, so he was on antibiotics) the vet at the hospital suggested Bio-sponge, which of course I didn't have on a Friday night. But my own vet suggested pro-biotics or even yogurt, both of which I DID have. I used the probiotics which did seem to help. But in his case taking him off the antibiotics really did the trick.

What works for many horses and people is coconut IE: Archway coconut macaroons. Or if they can't be found, coconut oil.

Thank you everyone. I have done BioSponge. These last two months we have gone thru an entire cotainer of the powder.

She has been on sucralifate and Metronidozole. UGH! Still is. I have use Walther Gastric Paste, terribly gross, but worked for a day.

OSU, put her on doxycycline, may kill something lingering, but guess what, causes more runs. So we had her cleared up and low and behold, they started that.

Have not tried sand clear, the rest of the herd is on Metamucil, same product, but never tried it on her. Since she has been here she has not been out, well briefly in her own pasture or on a lead, but she is in a quarantine stall. Who knows if dirt/sand was prevalent at the other farm. Maybe I will try that.

Just tonight our old school farm vet gave your suggestion Robin. She kind of liked it, and we put her on plain old oatmeal at his suggestion. I think i will go get the cookies tomorrow. We tried syringed oil tonight. And she will take food from Alec, so I hope she like cookies. If not, she will get them in her oatmeal.

Our hay if timothy/alfalfa. Some vets said too rich. OSU said the finer the better and this hay is fine.

She seems to get worses when it gets hot. I understand that. Somedays, she is just soft. Other days it is like water. Nothing is showing up on tests.

I will say one thing. My heart is breaking for her. She is kind, she knickers to me and my son. She is filling in. Maybe a body score 3-4. But if you saw her, you heart would break.

Somedays she wants a little grain, others only hay. Others nothing. I am at my wits end.

Thank you all, please keep suggestions coming. I honest to God have had 2 speacialists and 4 vets and a Nutritionist involved. Dr. Brick says this maybe her condition, just her. But I don't want to give up. If she would stop the runs, we could get weight on faster. Winter is around the corner.

I used a course of sand clear and pro-biotic paste with my senior mare that had chronic diarrhea, cleared her right up and haven't had an issue since. Though I suspect there must be something else going on. Is she very old? A food allergy maybe? Im reaching lol...

Im very interested about the coconut and cookies? How does that work? How many would you give them? I'll write this on my list of things to remember..

TC puts pro-biotics in all their feeds. I feed the TC safe starch forage and the stools are nice and firm. I also feed ground flax seed which - if I understand correctly - has a similar effect as sand clear. For putting weight on a horse I would go with the TC Complete. - it is high in fat - so wouldn't feed it to anyone with IR issues or overweight issues. I've never had a horse on TC that thier stools didn't improve in firmness and appearance - it's what sold me on thier feeds. I believe that if you want to know how good a feed is check out what the animal looks like that's eating it and what it looks like coming out the back end of an otherwise healthy animal. (I understand that yours is having issues that might be something other than feed.) If you go to their website and click on the feeds at the bottom of the screen it will give you a link to the sugar and starch analysis of all thier feeds.

I don't know how many cookies. All I know is I read an article written by a Dr many years ago. And when someone posted about their horse, I told about the cookies. It worked! It worked for others and worked for a breeder who needed it too. It may not work for all, but it's worth a try.

The coconut oil is working! And I found out why. Charcoal contains coconut oil, among other things. But talked to Dr Brick today and he says that is why. Another interesting fact, coconut milk will coat a tummy with ulcers. Learn something new everyday.

But we did find something out which I consider sad. Annie is bred.

We used a shipper, who we had never used for the first load of ponies we brought up. The second shipper , was awesome. Luke and Annie were together and she was in heat when she arrived. We gave her lutalyse, but it implanted and she is 2 months along. This mare can not get a break! Dr Brick says it explains a lot. He says Monday, he will go into it further.

To answere a few questions, she is 8. Allergies have not been tested for, and at this point it will be aways down the list. Monday is another fecal float, CBC w/ dif and ultrasound, rather then just the blood test to see what things look like.

And we did start the sand clear protocol and next week is another powerdose per Dr. Brick.

Thank you all for the well wishes, please realize we intended to retire this mare and NEVER breed her, but I guess she had other plans.

Thank you so much Robin. I will tell you, I was singing your praises today! I was so amazed with the results! I gave it to my colt with the scours too. When I took the syringe of it out to the pasture for the foal, another mare, Kristy took it and ran away with it. Apparently she LOVES coconut! It was a much needed laugh!

I bought the macaroons tonight too. But we are having fights for the cookies, so I also had to bring out some sugar cookies for my other spoiled children. They are always good for a laugh!!!!!

Oh Ellen, I can't tell you how happy I am to hear that it's working! I almost didn't post it because some things that I say sound off the wall and some people poo-poo what I say.

I guess I should share what I know and stop being quiet, as I have been the last 5 years.

I'm starting to open up and share again, good or bad LOL!

FYI There are TONS of human products made with coconut oil. My family uses it all the time. It really helps clear up exema(sp?) and skin conditions. And of course helps with digestion too.

My aunt makes a shake using it every morning for breakfast and uses the oil to cook with also. Coconut oil products can be found at almost all health food stores.

My future son in law and his family swear by the coconut oil. They use it for cooking, medical needs etc.

I love to eat coconut straight from the bag heheh.

I am going to get a few cans of the coconut milk as a treat for my mini and donk!

Robin, keep them coming. Some of my old horse cures sound crazy but work!!!!!!!! I am just glad you mentioned it and it is working!

The milk, seems to be working on my foal too. We still use his meds, but hey, the milk has ni ill effects!

I would be interested to hear of the other medicinal uses for it if Creatahillsgal wouldn't mind sharing.
