I was sick for two days, and didnt get out to the boarding barn to see Domingo. It seems like in those two days he turned into a candidate for head and shoulders!

He has dandruff all over his entire body. Neck, shoulders, rump, belly... everywhere but his head. He was body clipped almost three weeks ago, and last bathed two weeks ago, with quick silver. I usually spray healthy hair moisturizer on him daily, and put a sheet on him. In the two days I didn't apply the healthy hair this dandruff came on full force.

Im thinking I should rebath him in something mild to get all the dandruff off, and loosen anything else, and then condition his entire body. Im not sure what I should use so I dont irritate his skin, or what conditioner would work best. I use cholesterol on manes and tails. I also have an olive oil spray I use on his bridle path to prevent dandruff.

Am I right in thinking to give a mild bath, condition entire body, and then use a leave on conditioner after he dries like healthy hair or the olive oil spray?

He is on a good feed program, (strategy, grass hay, some alfalfa pellets, and a coat supplement containing flax, ricebran, and soy, and coconut oil) so I think that this is related to being clipped and using a drying shampoo on him. In the future Im going to try to use a different shampoo on his body, since this one made him so flaky.

I feed my horses Healthy Coat. I just squirt it in there grain 2x a day, they don't have too much of a dandruff problem and their coats are soft and shiny.

Here's the link, it's around $20 a gallon but it lasts a while and is really worth it!

Healthy Coat

Also, as far as what you can put on his skin/coat, there's MTG- MTG Link

Not sure about putting that all over his body though, I just use on smaller spots. It helps their hair grow in fast too. Great stuff!

I wonder if something accumlated on him. For example we had a horse once that we didnt get to rinse off after a show and the next day they were full of dandruff. I figured it was from leaving all the horse show stuff on and not rinsing it. We just bathed her and it came off like it was a residue. Also if you bath a horse and dont get all the shampoo off that will happen. I have been using the Olive Oil hair moisturizer in a can and it got rid of that bridle path dandruff in about 2 days.

There is a very old but great product on the market by Farnum called Super 14. Its been around over 30 years and is perfect for skin problems of most kinds and I swear by it. Put it in with feed and horses love it, it smells so good you'll want to eat it too.

Did the air dry out suddenly in your area or did your baby get outside and get sunburned? Wondering usually its something like Kay said or all of a sudden its dry out or they get sunburned.

Nope, no sunburn. He wasn't turned out outside. He only gets outside turnout when Im there, and I hadnt been at the boarding barn for 2 days because I was sick. He was just turned out in the indoor arena. I dont think the issue is from nutrition, until yesterday his coat was sooo shiny and soft, and his skin looked great. I'm thinking maybe I forgot to rinse him after the show. I know I washed his face off, but it's possible I may have forgotten to rinse his body. I just didnt realize it could take so long to cause dandruff.

You said it, Head and Shoulders! We were always taught in Pony Club to use it to get rid of dandruff and it works well, plus it leaves their coat super soft! It also rinses out well so nothing gets left behind.
