I've read that it's nice to give your mare a warm bran mash after foaling. I've never given my mares a bran mash and was wondering what type of bran and how much you give them. Thanks for the help, my mares are due any day now and I'm getting nervous!

I don't and never have given my girls a bran mash after foaling. I have read that bran is not so good for them, though if they like it, an occasional treat will be fine.

Mine love a warm feed of beet pulp, a bit of their grain sprinkled in and drizzled with a little bit of molasses (depending on if this is ok for your horse's general diet). They LOVE it and it gives them a boost of energy to get through the end of labor and getting back into the swing of things.

Sorry I don't have any help for you recipe-wise, perhaps some of the others can help out.

Don't worry too much if you don't have one ready for them, they will be just fine w/out it, too.

Your biggest job is watching and waiting and being there. Best wishes and good luck!

i second the alternative of giving a warm beet pulp mash. My vet generally thinks feeding bran is an outdated thing and that bran is just not a good horse feed when there are better alternatives available (such as beet pulp, which can be fed daily and is high fiber).

My mare did not get anything special after foaling. She was just fine

I always have given my mares a nice warm bran mash after foaling and starting in minis in 1985 until this day, I give my entire barn a warm bran mash meal once a week instead of their grain meal.

For a recipe, I just mix the bran with warm water until it is soupy, add molasses and a tablespoon of mineral oil for each horse , mix well and dish out to them. They love it and look forward to Sat. nights. BTW. my Vet approves and it was Tufts University that told me to do this in the first place after my first colic that had to go there. But I don't advise you to do it unless your Vet approves.
