Poison Ivy? About a week ago I posted a thread about a rash that I had gotten behind my ear ...which now I have gotten a few itchie spots just below my wrist and on the top on one of my hands......well just this evening while we were out playing with the pups, we come across behind the shed and sitting up just as happy as a clam is a bright beautiful healthy plant that looked to me to be Poison Ivy. But I did many searches and not one of the photos I see look like this plant out back. Lakota likes to nuzzle your neck and ears (I also had a couple of the rash bumps on my neck) so I thought maybe she had gotten into something and it stuck on her fur...well tonight I thought I found the culprit, until I started doing searches and came up with nothing that looks like this plant.

It is a low growing shrubby plant, with thorns as you can see. Very dark green, shiney and waxy. Looking at the poison ivy pics on the internet, they look different in color and size but I'm also thinking, could it be the area we're in that this plant may be some kind of poison too?

Anyway...I took a pic of it and if someone can help me to identify it I surely would appreciate it. I had no idea I could get a rash from a plant this time of year, because they were all suppose to be dried...until I saw this one that is!

That looks to my eyes anyway to be a blackberry bush.....and they stay green and happy longer than many other bushes.....I have never heard of anyone getting a rash from one...poked by the stickers but not a rash......

If this rash is spreading I would guess either a yeast infection type thing OR some sort of contact dermatitis from laundry soap or dryer sheets maybe.......

I have a family of sensitive skin......and laundry soap has caused many rashes over the years...most frequently I have seen or had rashes on necklines wrists and the worst....undies where the elastic is

It looks like poison ivy to me. I did a search for poison oak though and found a good site...sorry - dont know how to enter the link in! Good luck, Lori

That's definitely not poison ivy; I don't believe poison oak either, as I've never heard of poison oak having thorns. Besides, in fall both turn red in color--they would not still be green this time of year.

Keep in mind that it is possible to get poison ivy from hay.

Not sure what your plant is--doesn't look right for either blackberry or hawthorne.

Poison ivy has pointed leaves and in many areas its fairly dormant during the winter months. Not knowing if you are in a southern area or not but not to worry about that being poison ivy.

I took a pic of the blackberry/raspberry shrub along our fence line...and here is what it looks like. Most of them are either dying down or all dried out now. The leaves don't look alike.

I know it isn't poison Ivy or oak...Looks like a rose vine of some sort with the shape of leaves and the thorns...

Forgot to add...The residue from poison ivy can cause a rash for about 18 months even after the plant is removed. You can get the residue from smoke, and yes a dog licking you. The picture is definately not poison ivy, but you still could have it somewhere and not know it.

Ok, I obviously dont know my poison plants! But I do know that poison ivy - if gotten on clothes - can still be poisenous up to a year later. ( If the piece of clothing is left to lay unwashed...) I dont know if that is true with poisen oak or sumac though. That site that I posted has lots of pictures of the different plants and also pictures of the different rashes. Lori

The first picture looks like something in the rose family; either a wild shrub type rose or a blackberry. With the leaf size, I'm with Runamuk: Blackberry. It's the spittin image of my blackberries in the pony pasture. Heck to take care of, but have you seen the price of blackberries in the grocery store? They can be great money-makers.

I hope you find your culprit soon. Itchy is the pits.

We love trying to identify plants!

Where are you located? Is this a recent pic?

Do you ever remember it being in bloom or fruit? It does certainly look like it belongs to the Rosaceae family. Could be a Rubus? It also looks to be a woody plant as opposed to herbaceous.

We're checking all our reference books as I send this...will let you know our best guess

Thanks for all your ideas you guys!!!!

I kinda thought blackberry too, but the other pic of our blackberries is just so different looking.

ali...I certainly appreciate if you find anything! Yes this pic was taken yesterday evening....oh probably about 4:00? We're here in southern NJ. Funny thing I don't ever remember seeing that plant ther ever....thats why it threw me for a loop. I know where all of the blackberry shrubs are, and this one is sitting in quite a conspicuous area, behind a shed yet sorta out away from it maybe about a foot. The only fruity shubbery we have are the blackberries, and I know they have little white flowers before the fruit pops out. Thanks for your research!

I'm gonna check out a Rubus...I don't know my plants well but I'll do a search on it.

Your plant, from the pic supplied, appears to be a Rubus of some sort. It's very difficult from the pic alone because it also resembles a rose although a rose usually has leaves in groups of 5 or 7. The leaves on your plant appear to be very shiny and waxy.

Watch the plant next year and see if it flowers. It may not if it's not getting enough sunlight or it may take a year or two until it matures.

Keep away if you believe this plant to be your source of rash.

P.S. Never burn Poison Ivy plants as the fumes emitted are highly toxic. Poison Ivy can also be a master of disguises. It can grow in a clump form, climb and changes colour in the fall to red. Nasty, nasty plant.

Sorry we're not able to give you a positive ID at this stage.

Thanks ali.....I do appreciate the info you did give me. I will keep an eye on it...that is if hubby has'nt already cut and pulled it up.

Definitely not poison ivy. I can't tell you how many times as a kid I ended up in poison ivy...

Are you taking antibiotics? Sometimes those cause rashes. Changed your soap? Lotion? Are you under stress (hives)? I recently got a rash on my wrists and neck - my doctor thinks it was a reaction something I ate.

Liz...no, no antibiotics. The only thing I can think of that I've changed is my dish detergent. Still the same brand, but a different "flavor". I use a watermelon/blueberry one and I recently changed to Alpine purity. But would'nt my hands all be full of rashy stuff if it were that? Wierd thing for it to start out around my ear tho.

You mean to tell me there's poison ivy in CA????

I don't remember that............I do however remember the ice plants...so does my mom....where she could never get out the green stain fro my white socks.
