I seem to have temporarily misplaced my growth chart. Can someone tell me how tall I should expect this little filly to grow. Right now she is 5 months plus a week old and is 23". She is my little miracle baby that was born with front legs contracted to the point that there was no way to measure her back before surgery because she could not stand up straight. At the time she was born I measured 14" but of course it was inaccurate due to her deformity and she weighed 24 at a week old just before medical treatments began. She was actually the guinea pig for this type of surgery. It was a huge success. I took her back to A & M October 19 for her checkup and the surgeon there was "pleased beyond his expectations". She showed out with lots of running, raring up, and bucking. In fact her walk will always be her most awkward gait due to the fact that the front legs drag a bit since they don't bend. Anyway, I tend to think she is going to be under 30" when grown but was wondering what the actual chart would indicate.

Maturity Height Configuration for Miniature

Horses. Based on Foal age in Months.

Back to Home Page

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Projected Height 28" 29" 30" 31" 32" 33" 34" 36"

At Maturity

Birth 18.2 18.9 19.5 20.2 20.8 21.5 22.0 23.4

6 months 23.8 24.7 25.5 26.4 27.2 28.0 29.0 30.5

12 months 25.2 26.1 27.0 28.0 28.8 29.7 30.5 32.5

18 months 26.4 27.3 28.1 29.2 30.0 31.0 32.0 33.9

24 months 27.2 28.0 29.0 30.0 31.0 32.0 33.0 35.0

To use the above chart to determine mature height for a foal, measure the height of the miniature foal at a given interval such as birth, 6, 12, 18 or 24 months of age. Located the age interval on the left hand column. Then scroll across the age interval until one finds the height of the miniature foal. Once the height is located scroll up to the top line for mature height of the miniature horse.

Example: If a mini foal is 19.5 inches at birth the mature height of the miniature horse should be 30 inches.

The above chart is intended as a reference only and will have slight variations based on the genetics, nutrition, care, and health of the individual miniature h

Thanks Genie. Looks like I am looking at 28"ish.

My first foal born here, Spirit, measured 21" at birth. His dam is 33" tall and his sire is 32.25" tall. I expected him to mature between 32"-33", as a 2 yr. old he's 27 1/2 inches tall. So quite the suprise there, you really never know how tall they're going to be, so now I just wait and watch 'em grow!

Any chart is just a guide line and I have found they just do not work....and I know many people have found them to be spot on!!

Rabbit's children stop growing at a year, what you have then is what you will have, with a possible half inch added for adult fat, at seven years old.

Other lines grow on well past five years old.

It just depends.

With Carlos it would seem to depend a lot on the height of the mare, but they grow on longer than Rabbit's children that's for sure.

Since your filly had such a bad start she may well go on growing a bit longer.

At the end of the day, what does it matter??

Whatever height they are, they have us hooked and they know it!

Rabbitsfizz - You deinitely got the right answer from what I have seen!!

I agree....charts, or any other type of measuring to predict adult height, are just estimates at best.

For instance....you may have a foal that is very small at birth, due to being a "preemie" or a bit early. That foal will most likely grow a lot taller than the chart predicts, based on birth height. Or, you may have a foal who is HUGE at birth, due to being carried longer than most. That foal may actually grow a lot less than the "preemie" foal, as it is has had extra time & growth before it was delivered. Then, you have the fact that different bloodlines grow at different rates. As Rabbit said, her bloodlines tend to mature very early. My CockRobin foals always did that too.....they grew like gangbusters the first 6 months, but most didn't grow a lick after 1 year. I had some that were 27 - 28" at only 3 months, who matured at 30 - 31".

The best any of us can do, is give "educated guesses".

I agree with Rabbit as well. ALL the foals by our stallion are done growing at a year....so needless to say we want them to grow grow grow (we like 32-34") as babies because we know by the following summer we have all the growth we will get.....aside the maturing and filling out. We have had some born where we though oh boy they are going to be close on the AMHA height but never went over 30-31"??????? So ya just never know.

I had a filly who at 4 months was 32 inches I thought I had a percheron for sure! She topped out at 33 and that was it. It was amazing really.

I think a lot depends on how the mare was fed sometimes.Awell fed mare may have a bigger baby at birth but then they don't grown as much.
