This might be different because I am a guy, and not into decorative trinkets or things like that, but I always get really strange gifts from relatives who think that since I am involved with horses, I will like anything with a horse painted on it. Here are some things I can count on each year, or have received over the years....

Horse wind chimes(I live with my parents while I save for grad school, so the wind chimes are hung in my closet)

An ugly teal sweatshirt with a horse galloping on the shoreline.

Several horse calendars each year(I use one at the barn, and stack the rest in the closet)

Coffee mugs with horses on them(I don't drink coffee)

A frame with a picture of a horse in it(not my horse)

Horse books(Such as "horses for dummies" and "The Horse Whisperer")

(Not Horse related, but Mom always gives me a chocolate Santa, and she knows I never eat it because I don't like the chocolate, but I get it every year anyway)

Horse bumper stickers that I would never actually put on my car.

Random things from the tack shop(The salesperson told them it would "make a good gift")

Tiz the season of gift giving, and it is always fun to hear about those odd gifts, but be careful you don't talk about a gift you got from someone here on the forum...

My brother kept talking about the perfect Christmas present that he found me. Now remember we are in our 40's. I am really expecting something great. It was a good thing he wasnt here when i opened my gift - it was a saddle purse. No offense to anyone but I dont even carry a purse (not ever) let alone a saddle. We live in different states so I ahve never had to explain why I dont use it.

That is quite a collection by now.

The upside is you're all set to "regift" as someone's Secret Santa here on the forum!

I've also gotten all kinds of horsey things over the years. My dad was a dedicated golfer, he got golf themed presents every year. Guess it's sort of natural for people who know your interest but don't really know what to give you.

Lisa, those purses are awesome!

I haven't gotten many gifts lately for Christmas so I can't say much about those "smile and nod" gifts

Matt,

You can send me the teal sweat shirt.

Honestly there are a lot of horsey people here that would love to get some of the stuff you got. Maybe after Christmas you could post them on the rescue auction. That way instead of the stuff rotting in your closet the rescue could get some money. In the true Christmas spirit you would be helping those in need.

Ok how about a paper plate hanger for my wall. I do not use paper plate and would never hang them on my wall if I did. Just me, no offense to anyone that might do that, it just isn't my thing. Or everything in yellow, green or orange, when I clearly decorate in blues and burgundies. ???? Silly people. I have boxes of stuff that I cannot get rid of because so and so gave it to us and will never use. What a waste. LOL

Every year I rack my brain trying to figure out good gifts for my Dad and Step-mom. They are into golf, my Dad loves the A's and Seahawks and fishing. I always try to get my step-mother pretty things that go with her decore or for the kitchen since she loves to cook. The fondue pot and espresso/cappuchino machines are still in the boxes under her sink--still sealed. The stuff for my dad (no matter what it is and how hard I try) still hangs in the closet. I really, really try hard and always get the "smile and nod" no matter what direction I go in. It really hurts my feelings. A couple of years ago hubby and I spent more money than ever on ANY gift to get my dad a surround sound system for his entertainment system--I mean a NICE Sony set. He had mentioned wanting one...and yet even that...and the $600+ that we put into it sits in the basement. Sigh. I give up. Sometimes people don't want things at all unless they get them themselves I guess. Still....it sure makes those of us that spend our money and energy trying so hard really feel like crap.

Amy,

I know what you mean about buying stuff for people and then they never touch it. In the past few years whatever I have bought my husband has gone untouched. The shirt and jeans he asked for. The antique music boxes he collects. A number of things he has asked for. He carries them into his closet after Christmas and forgets they are there.

I now go into his closet before his birthday or Christmas and rewrap what it there. He has asked for them again forgetting he got them before and has not touched them. Sure make my shopping easy.

Maybe you could tell you dad you would like a surround sound system for Christmas.

Yes, Hubby says he likes everything the kids get him.

Well, I asked hubby what he wanted for Christmas, he said he could not think of anything.

He told me to get what I might like. Well I thought and thought and thought again.

I got him a computer chair, not quite the one I wanted with message and heat, but I did get one.

I had to tell him, because he had to bring it in from the van. He could not believe I did that, he laughed and said OK than I am going to charge a $1.00 an hour for anyone using it. Oh boy, this gift is going to be expensive....
