This is Rambo. He is by a buckskin (by 2 buckskins) out of a black/white. Baby pictures you all thought he was either smokey black or smutty buckskin. SO.......what do you think now? I need to send in his registration papers. His legs are the same color, not black.

He is now 3 months old and ALL stud.

This is a "baby" pic so you can see what he looked like to start with.

do you know if either of his parents are homozygous for black? if not, he could be a dark chestnut. if one or more of them is, then i suppose bay pinto, although some smokey blacks do appear that way (i think).

well with his parentage (assuming that both parents are hetrozygoues for black) he could be black, smokey black, bay, buckskin, chestnut, or palomino. we know he isn't black, buckskin, or palomino. so either bay, chestnut, or smokey black.

smokey black is my best guess for him,....

but i know exactly what he is! a perfect job for GENETIC TESTING MAN! lol

He looks like a bay and white, because his mane and tail look to be turning black. He MIGHT be smutty buckskin, I guess to be sure, you could test for creme, if he is carrying the creme gene, then he is a buckskin, if he isnt, then my guess is defenitely bay. I wouldnt think he was smokey black, as a smokey black looks black and this guy doesnt.

you are right, most smokey blacks look black, but wasn't there a post a while back about a mare they thought was liver chestnut and got like a cremello or something? then everyone said she was smokey black. his coloring looks a lot like hers. it would help if we knew wether the buckskin was homozygous for agouti or not. then he could not be a black/smokey black. his baby picture REALLY looks smokey black. but now he really looks bay. i am going to agree in guessing he is a bay. the more i look at it, the more i think bay. but we could be wrong. anyone know what that other post was? or how we could find it?

his mane does appear darker, which would make sense of him being a bay, but who knows? i don't know about the whole smutty thing, so i guess could be smutty buckskin. i wish we could see that one mare. i'll stick with bay for now, but if we find that mare, and they look the same, i'm not going to dismiss the idea of a smokey black. you should test for cream. that would narrow things down. if he has it, he is smokey black or smutty buckskin. if not, he is most definately a bay. hmmm, idk.his baby picture really looks smokey black though. someone please look up that post!

He is a dark Buckskin.

He could only be a Smoky Black if the Black and White parent were proven to carry Cream.

He can still be smokey black since the dam has cream.

Have him agouti and cream tested, then you´ll know for sure.

The light areas around the eyes and nose could be sunburn, had a black registerred as dark-bay once because of sunburn.

Sorry- I meant DD on Black- not "Smoky" Black!! Too early in the morning

I don't think the dam carries cream. She has only produced sorrel, grull (bred to grullo), black and now this. Guess the only way to really know is the test.
