I have a tobiano mini with no appy backround. No white on the face but white hairs throughout the body and a patch of roaning on the forhead. White stockings in back and white socks in front.

Is there something else going on color wise ?

Would like some input please :saludando:

Sounds like they may have some "Sabino" roaning going on.

Where would the sabino come from ? Don't they have to have more white on their face ?

Does a horse with sabino have a better chance of producing foals with color ? Does a sabino have to come from 2 pinto parents ?

Sorry... I don't really understand this color pattern well enough.

Sabino does not have to have white in their face, they just generally do, AND that roaning counts as white. I have a minimally marked Sabino who has just a VERY faint white marking in her face and roaning throughout her body.

The more "Pinto" genes you have, the better chance you have of producing color. Sabino does NOT have to have two Pinto parents, just one. You may be confusing the term with "homozygous" which refers to a horse who has got the same color or pattern gene from both parents.

A Sabino wouldn't necessarily "have" to have white on it's face. Some Sabinos are "minimally expressed" & have nothing more than some "roaning" on their bodies. While others go to the other extreme & are "Maximum expressed" sabinos, who are almost totally white.

A Sabino doesn't have to have 2 pinto parents...all it takes is for one parent to carry the Sabino gene & pass it to the foal.

A Sabino has no better chance of producing foals with color, than any other pinto pattern.

"Homozygous" tobianos have the best percentages of throwing color (100%)

Pintos that carry multiple pinto patterns....such as tobiano,splash,frame,sabino....can throw a high percentage of color simply because they have more "patterns" to throw.

What color is brullo???

It's Grullo, and it is sort of like a smutty/greyish buckskin or could be more on the brown side! Grullo has a dorsal stripe and dark points (legs, head darker than body) just like a roan or a buckskin. Hope this helps a little! I have a pic of a grulla appy filly but it doesn't show color very well because she is frosting in her winter woolies so i'll save this photo for someone else!

I think you mean "Grullo".

That is basically a Gray Dun with primitive markings. Their body is usually a shade of slate gray color, with black mane, black tail & lower legs & head. Most have at least a few of the "primitive markings"....such as dorsal, shoulder barring, leg barring, cobwebbing on face.

Grullo- or in this case, Grulla, showing why, in Europe we referr to them as "blue" Duns. This mare also, I am pretty sure, is Roan- it is very hard to see on this base colour, but her Mother is exactly the same colour and is a Roan, and her Grandmother was a Black Roan.

I do know what homozygous means, it's the sabino I was confused about, but now I get it :aktion033:
