Hi everyone, well I have had this mare for four years, and we always thought she was a grey. I've talked to a couple of different people, and gotten a few different opinions. I just wanted to know what yours was. Just so you know, she is 5 right now. Keep in mind that these are probably the most unflattering pictures of this horse I have, but they show her color ok. She's actually quite a nice horse!

This mare was born bay.

At one, she shed that out and became a grey.

Since then, she has gone through various stages of grey. (Note, the third picture was taken late this winter, while she was 9 months pregnant!!

For some bground info: Her dam is a black/white pinto, and is Orion on the top and bottom. There are a lot of pintos, appaloosas, and pintaloosas. She has mottling

on her muzzle and her anus. She does have striped hooves. However, she has no spots (actually, she had one once, but it shed out!!

Now, my question is, will she grey out? Unfortunetly I do not know what her father looked like (Brewer's High N Mighty), but I do not know many in her immediate pedigree that where grey. I've had one person tell me she may be gulla. Is there a difference between grullO and grullA? Is one correct and one incorrect?

Also, do we show her is solid or multi color class? She has no spots. Will she get some with time? The mottling seems to have increase this year while she is pregnant. There has been a lightening in her color when you look at it very broadly, but nothing very drastic. Very sutble changes.

Now, questions number 2. We bred her to a palomino, 2 blue eyes, Rowdy grandson this year. Unfortunetly I dont know any more in the way of color in his pedigree, but what the heck will that baby look like? The stallion has so far thrown a grey filly (out of a dominent grey mare) and maybe a palomino out of a black pintaloosa who has Orion somewhere up there.

Sorry this is so long, hope someone can trudge through it all and help me out. Thank you all very much!!

Looks like varnished appaloosa to me. :bgrin

You can submit a photo to this site or ask on the forum there for some help http://www.equinecolor.com/

Greys "grey" from the face first, so the fact that she is still quite bay around the face plus sclera plus mottling plus striped hooves = appaloosa to me!

I would also say varnish roan appy - to add to what sassy1 has to say - gray horses' tails go gray from the bottom up like the mare in this picture

She sure is a cutie and I love the jumping picture!

I haven't looked at the other responses yet, and appy isn't my forte, but... I say she's bay with appy roaning.

They are both correct. The Spanish language assigns gender to nouns, pronouns and such, so... Grulla is for female and grullo is for male.

Actually, although it is true that a endings in Spanish mean female, and o endings male, in this particular case the word "grulla" means crane (like a Sandhill crane, or a bird, not a big machine that lifts things). When they are talking about a horse's color, they say "grullo".

She is a Varnish Roan- she may or may not also be Grey, in order to be Appy or Grey at least one parent must be Appy or Grey, they are simple dominants.

I don't think she can be a varnish roan because when I looked at her I thought she looks like a varnish roan, maybe appy. Sooooooo considering I'm never right when I guess a horses color you all must be wrong too
