Dangerous Heat I had 3 down at once

Wow, it seems odd to hear that horses are having trouble in temps around 100- we typically soar way above that and had 118 a couple of times already this summer. Normally our average is 108 to 110 during the summer. My horses are out in it, running and playing like it is 80!!

It must be the humidity factor increasing your heat?? We have extremely low humidity here- sometimes 8% and really whine if it is over 25%. (it gets high if it's raining of course, but doesnt last)

I find it also odd that we have set more record highs this year.... and then it dropped from the 118 to the mid and upper 90's- pretty much unheard of here in the summer, while the rest of the nation is having deaths from the heat!!

I wish everyone good health and that nobody has any trouble with 2 or 4 legged ones in the heat you are getting!

Jane you must have been sending your sprinkler idea via esp cuz as I sat before my fan watching my sprinkler on the ground and the girls thinging, "ok, now what has mom done now?

: ", I was thinking, "hmmmm if I could mount it on a long pole and hang it from the shed roof upside down it would seem like rain to them instead of one of "mom's weird ideas". So now how to mount it wayyy up there without falling down! No worries I will Mcguyver it somehow!

Have you ever tried hanging a lawn sprinkler from a pole- upside down- and putting it on low???

Just catching up on reading and ran across this. No, they don't always have enough sense to come in out of the sun. I know someone who lost a couple of foals several years ago - they just basically lay out in the sun and cooked.

Thanks for putting this up. I read the part about your scruchies and it really helped me out. Mine were getting a lot of eye gooies since it got hot. I put a rubberband on their forlocks while they are inside. Their eyes are fine now. The sawdust was getting in the forlock and then into their eyes.

You really take such good care of your horses.

I bring mine in the barn at 6:30am and keep them in stalls (with fans) for the entire day - they are turned out a 6:00 at night if it is nice or 7:30 or later if it is still too hot.

Being in the barn helps with the flies too -- the horses RUN into the barn in the morning and eat their breakfast then lie down to take naps! They are ready to be turned back out again when I get home.

They stay in 24 hours (with turn out in round pen) when the weather is really stormy (severe thunderstorms expected etc..) ..

In the winter they go out during the day and are up at night.

Works for us.
