I just got inside, I didn't think I would be able to do this but I want to tell you all and its easier to get it off my chest....
To start the day off we had our 13 year old beagle dog put down this am because of a brain tumour..
I was home alone when Katie went into labour at 6.00pm and everything looked textbook. As soon as she started I went in and checked everything was ok...the two feet and the little nose were just where they were supposed to be so I watched for a while.
Everything went fine until the foal reached its hips, after 5 minutes of nothing a tried to pull with the contractions. After another five minutes and a few panicked phonecalls, I decided it was hiplocked and tried to turn it....It would budge.
On the phone to the vet who was 1/2 an hour away and still pulling I thought something else must be up...so I went back in and found a tiny hoof jammed up alongside the foals stomach. As soon as I felt that foot, I knew it was over.
I was on my own and almost hysterical by this point, at 6.30 I realised my foal was no longer breathing...that's when I just lost it.
Much later my mum and sister arrived home and then shortly after the vet arrived.
The vet gave Katie an anaesthetic and then tried to get the foal out...Finally after almost two hours a beautiful filly foal was born - dead.
Katie tried so very hard and completely exhausted herself to deliver her filly. It was a bright red bay - minimal pinto with four white stockings legs for miles and a stunning head...she is perfect in every way.
Finding it very hard to get my head around...309 days of pure love and excitement that amounts to this....there are no words to say how I feel.
Katie is in a bad way, she was out cold for over 1/2 an hour and still has not passed the placenta. Her little heart is breaking too, she doesn't understand and keeps licking her filly and nickering to it...
Please pray for Katie, the vet has given her antibiotics and pain killers and will be back in the morning and we will go from there.
Sorry if this is dis-jointed and full of typos...just thought I should let you all know.
Thankyou for your support, Helen
