In the past 24 hours I have recieved emails from 2 seperate breeders offering a Shetland for sale...I've never been solicited like this before with my email address...there must be 300 plus names on the email list that the email was sent to besides me. I find it really bizarre. especially since I don't even breed or show shetlands. I am wondering if anyone else has been getting these emails and if you think one of the registries sold our email adresses? Curious to hear what everyone thinks. Not a big deal, but hope it's not a new trend....Thanks in advance.

I haven't gotten anything . . .but I would hope they wouldn't

I got the two e-mails too and I also do not breed Sheltlands. In the past I have gotten e-mails from people selling their herds and not too long ago, one about stallions that they were selling. I too wonder, what gives?

I got the emails as well, no shetlands here (at least not yet!

Sounds like the same e-mails that I got as well.

Don't recall that one but I periodically get emails listing horses for sale or auction etc. These emails aren't usually from the owners but from someone who is acting as an agent or such for them. Those emails do offer you the chance to unsubscribe though.

I don't think so. I'm sure its from someone you had dealings with (whether it be for a show jacket or something else). I recieve a printed flyer for horses for sale each year from a farm. I think I bought a tack item from them a few years ago, but they keep me on their mailing list now. Same with emails. I just get mass emails from people who have contacted me about something or me contacting them. They just send out to everyone in their email box.

I received the emails as well and I also do not do shetlands and never have plans on it. I also did not know the places and have not had any dealings with them so really not sure how they got my info either....

I did get the email as well, however the one I got the person also has minis, I am guessing if at any time you may have contacted them in regards to anything they were selling, you would be saved in thier address book. So they probably just sent the email to thier entire address book. I honestly can't imagine the registry would sell the information...

I know the registry doesn't sell email addresses, AMHR does sell mailing lists (snail mail). But - please remember clubs often list members addresses and emails and anyone can go onto club websites and grab everyone's email from the club membership.

Well I am an AMHR member and I haven't gotten the e-mails (and I have Shetlands!) so I don't know why they would only send to some and not all members? I can't imagine some random breeders would "buy" the information anyway?

Do you guys have websites? Perhaps they gained the info that way?

Andrea

Ummmm... i don't know that AMHR sells mailing lists!

I remember two years ago, we had started a club. I had previously been a board member on another club. Well, I wanted to mail out newsletters inviting locals to come and show...

I had mailed a lady a newsletter and she was SO mad, she accused me of "stealing" the other club's mailing list and told me how horrible a person I was!

Well...

If you go to the ASPC/AMHR site, you can click "Members" at the top left of a page, click the state, and Voila! All the registered members' addresses and phone numbers.

Geez. So it's all there, hate to say!!! No "stealing" or "buying/selling" these contact information! But the e-mail addresses aren't on there that I can see, so ???

Andrea

E-mail addresses are very easy to get a hold of, why would anyone ever pay for them? LOL You cna find e-mail addresses on this forum, the sale board, other sales sites, your own website, club websites, and the registry websites.

I agree, & not a big deal to me, I have a delete button

There is also the Directory which contains quite a few email addresses. This is the new form of advertising, similiar to telephone soliciting, and there are companies that you can pay a small amount to send mass emails for you. You may not have been interested but there could quite possibly be a few on that long list that would be. It is getting to be a more and more impersonal world but, as Reble said, - you can just hit delete!
