Does anyone free feed hay ?

I am already concerned about the weight of one of my mares so I dont think I will go

that route as she seems to be the one that wont stop eating if I free feed.

It is also hard to tell as it has already been in the minuses here and we have had some snow so she is already a wooly little mammoth.
