I'm starting to look at R/C (radio controlled) planes - these are model planes, not real! Does anyone here fly R/C planes and if so, do you have one you can recommend? The Hobbico NexStars looks pretty cool -

My husband has a pby rc plane. If this is your first an ARF or RTF is a good choice. The super cub is also a good plane to learn to fly on, it has anti crash technology that can be turned off to do tricks. When checking out what plane, make sure to compare flight time, some of then get very little time on a charge. They do make a charger you can use with your car for a quick recharge. Have fun!

Ah the good ol' days. I dont but when my Dad was alive, he had them. He worked in aeronautics all his life. He used to design and build his own R/C's and very painstakingly put them together. Want to see a grown man cry? Watch what happens when his plane crashes that he spent weeks working on, LOL

He also wrote a couple of articles that I remember were published in the RC model magazine back then (this was probably in the last 60's or early 70's by then). He loved hanging out on Sunday mornings at the field with the other guys who loved this hobby.

I miss my Dad...............

LOL!!! This makes me laugh!! Not at you by any means but at my husband! Hubby did this trade with some guy for some hunting stuff and got a large plane in return. 6 foot wing span and all the stuff to go with it, I just shook my head and let him be. After about 6 months of research and staring and admireing this plane he decides to fly it(mind you this is NO beginners plane, which I told him and he knew!! ). Beautiful day, big open field, gets it up in the air, and this plane is booking fast, goes to turn and head back to the ground...... well now it's in a million pieces!!! We all can laugh about it now but it was a pretty amazing sight as it hit the ground!!! What ever you do get a cheep starter plane to practice on!!!! Ebay?

LOL - good advice and thank you! Yes, I am concerned about that "crash" factor for sure! Laurie - your dad sounds like he was very talented!

Dad was very talented and was instrumental in many aeronautic designs, and worked on some secret government things during his long career. He loved airplanes, things that fly, and anything related.

Yep, the RC's can be reduced to toothpicks in seconds, LOL. I dont know of ANY CHEAP ones to start on!!! They are all pretty pricey, as it goes, but some more than others I am sure- so keep a full box of Kleenex handy, LOL! Dad always had extra parts, designs and 'ingredients' on hand to make another, and usually had a project always going while he had one flying. He love creating them. He had a huge drafting table where he always had a design for a new model going too. He loved making things of wood too- carving, etc.... and we have some beautiful things he made from a hunk of wood into beautiful art.

I have to laugh, my mother could not draw a stick figure. Some of us kids inherited Dad's artistic talents to some degree and others did not at all.

My first suggestion is do not buy your first RCplane online. Go to a hobby store. they have lots of info and may be able to hook you up with a club or someone who can give you at least one lesson before you buy. Second if you must buy on line, you are better off not to even try. You'll get off on the wrong foot and just waste your money. Again go to a hobby store first. Do not go electric, most are just junk. Go with a glow motor,Most trainers will take a .40 size. Great planes hase packages that you can buy that have plane radio motor and starting equipment. Again if this is something you think you will like GO TO A HOBBY STORE FIRST!

I must clarify! "Cheep" as in under 200 dollars!

Also our "local" hobby shop was over 75 miles away! So getting advice(not willing to do much over the phone!) and GOING there was out of the question for us at that time! So hubby had to try it on his own! Now we have rc cars and finally there is a hobby shop that JUST opened about 35-40 miles from us. Very nice guy and I'm all for supporting small businesses that are local(same county!!

if possable. We also got our first nitro(and a battery car too) car in a trade and it was in mint condition not even broken in. Very happy with it! Next 2 we bought on line(Ebay) used and both had major problems. Hubby has no problem doing the small engine(trans, repair, thats how we got them for a great price. Our nitro rc cars have been a wonderful family experience for us! Actually alot of crashes! But these guys can handle it more then the plane! Still gotta laugh though watching us husteling across the school parking lot(thats where we play!!) when we flip them or crash must be absoultly tummy bending funny!! It's fun doing it, it's gotta be funny watching it!!

Why not have fun!!!!

Thanks, everyone - very good advice! I researched a little online and the more I read, the more confused I got! I have located a hobby shop not too far from me, so I'm going to stop by the store and talk to them - I think they will be able to offer some good suggestions for a beginner like me!

My husband wanted one of these, a big and expensive one. Since he'd never had anything but a plane on a string (remember those?!?!) I bought him a large styrofoam RC plane. It flies rather well and can be fixed when crashed, or in his case, stuck in a tree top!

He decided the actual RC planes weren't for him. LOL. Good luck with your new toy!!
