Hello everyone! I have been having trouble breathing lately and last night/this morning was the worst! It seems that when I or someone around me cuts grass, I have difficulty breathing. I wheeze and just can't seem to get enough air. Well, last night I went to bed wheezing a little bit but by 1 am I woke up from it as it had gotten worse. I took some Benadryl and NEVER will take that stuff again. That stuff is hallucinogentic I tell ya. (it was the childrens liquid too). Well by 7 am, I was a total disaster. You could hear me suffocating through the house and I managed to drap myself to ShopRite and get some anti-histamine which once I took it, within 20 minutes I could breathe much better but not 100% right. I wound up basically passing out on the couch for an hour once the anti-histamine kicked in until I had to take my boyfriend, Denny, to his Lyme doctor. All day long I felt like total crap and everything just hurt. I would cough and my shoulders would feeling like they were burning down my arms. I'm doing ok now, breathing normal, but everything still hurts and I'm dead tired.

I have noticed just this year that I have breathing problems when I cut the grass so I have gotten into the habit of wearing a mask when I mow. But Denny did some cutting both Saturday and Sunday with the garden tractor and my Landlords and neighbors were out cutting their grass over the weekend also. Of course, I can't wear a mask 24/7. I do think this is an allergy problem that I just developed this year.

Has anyone else suffered this? What did/do you take for it? I seriously thought I was going to pass out at one point and I thought I was going to have a heart attack as I got all clammy hot and started getting tunnel vision. I felt like I had an elephant sitting on my chest and I couldn't get enough air. What a HORRIFIC feeling! Denny was ready to call an ambulance for me but then the anti-histamine kicked in and worked. Thank God I was able to take him to his Lyme doctor appointment. (He can't drive anymore)

I can't afford to be down sick. With Denny being disabled and not able to do just about anything without assistance, I CAN'T be down like this. Thanks everyone.

This is nothing to play around with, untreat you can have an asthma attack that can kill you.

Get to the DR. and find out just what your problem is. If it is asthma your Dr. will give you meds that should prevent an attack and meds to take if you have one.

They say the older you when you develop an allergy the worst they become. I "had" asthma for years, quit my job 2 1/2 years ago and have not had a problem since but when I did the meds helped A LOT.

I'm not sure if I have full-blown asthma, but I do get allergy caused asthma attacks in late spring (I'm allergic to a couple of weeds out here on the ranch). I've been prescribed an albuterol (sp) inhaler by my doctor and I take Clartin, almost daily for the couple of months that those plants are blooming. [yes, Benadryl can cause strange things. My MIL told me, she has nightmares when she takes Benadryl, wouldn't you know it, so do I. Well, not quite nightmares, but some very wacked out dreams, bordering on nightmares]. I usually end up taking Claritin and Sudafed to keep me breathing well (I like to buy them separate as the combo products don't work as well for me). It would probably good for you to see a doctor and find out if it's just severe allergies or asthma (we had a family friend pass on, due to asthma related complications).

I had asthma terribly as a child and grew out of it to an extent. But as I age, it seems to be coming back. Things that bother me are "clothes out of the dryer, humidity, sitting right by a heater vent (like in the car when the heat is coming out of the front vents)" I've gotten to the point where I can't even fold clothes unless they are cold. When my dryer broke and I had to use the laundry mat a couple times, I couldn't breathe in there at all. Going to far south in the summer, my sis lives in North Carolina, forget it. I've been there in August and couldn't leave the air conditioning. Allergy attacks can certainly cause an asthma attack if you have asthma. Definatlely go to the doctor. Wishing you the best.

Linda, this is nothing to ignore. I had asthma as a child so badly I had to be rushed for an epinaephine(?) shot. Now at 50 I found it came back mostly during grass mowing like you. I hate the rush puffers give you like albuteral but understand for some it is very necessary to live. When really necessary I will use a puffer called "asthma-cort" which is cortisone based and quickly eases my breathing while I use other natural healing means day to day to keep the attacks a bay. I mowed yesterday with no problem but I was armed and ready. If I can help let me know but do look into seeing a DR, ask about getting help. Denny needs you!

i have asthma, very severe also, im constantly taking nebulisers for it as well as steroids, its an awful feeling, its like trying to breath through a straw isnt it

: i sometimes forget my sprays and when i go for a slight walk is can trigger an attack, which is very frightening, i actually took an attack last week, it gets even worse in the summer and winter, and i find I'm more prone to sinus trouble because of it, which leads to migraines, I'm sounding like a hyprocondriac now lol, but its not to be laughed at its a crippling disorder, i hope your okay

Thanks everyone. I feel a lot better today. I slept like a log last night. :aktion033: I will make an appointment with my doctor as soon as I get things in order with Denny first - which should be by the end of this week. I'm kind of concerned about how things will go tonight but we will see. I stacked a load of hay this evening and then clipped two mares. So far so good.

: But if I get an attack tonight like the other night, I will DEFINITELY be at my doctor's door when he opens in the morning.

: To be honest, I never realized that asthma can be fatal. :new_shocked:

: I certainly have a new found respect for those who suffer with it. It is horrible and scary to say the least.

I am a severe asthmatic and almost died more then once I have had to be intabated (sp) Raven has it also but not as bad. It is nothing to mess with you should go to the doctor and get an inhaler.

Also there are many OTC drugs I cant take or they make my asthma much worse.

I was taking steroids daily for years to breath but the damage they did was almost as bad so I am weaning off of them and trying other things.

I had my first severe asthma attack while pregnant with my last child. Guess I had it all along but didn't recognize it for what it was because it wasn't severe enough to send me to the hospital. The most recent one, while pregnant, sent me to the ER. I had a very low oxygen concentration and a number of nebulizer treatments did not help so they gave me a shot of cortisone. I was then put on an Albuterol inhaler as needed with Advair for long term control and a short term cough suppressant. Less concern with these medicines while pregnant than with baby getting limited oxygen. I am coming into the season of hay cutting which causes my son and I both grief so I know the feeling. It can be very scary and not something to mess with. Definitely go to your doctor to get it under control.

Thanks again everyone. So far so good. It is now Thursday night and I haven't had an attack since Sunday night/Monday morning's horrible attack. They did mow the grass at the farm where I work today and of course, the windows were open in the office where I work as it was a hot day here today. So far, I am ok.

How often do attacks occur? Are they sporadic or do they come on in a pattern? I am so scared of having another one like on Monday. That really scared the $%^&&%#@@!!! out of me and Denny. He asks me every morning how I am so I know he's concerned.

With it being so sporadic, I am holding off seeing the doctor which knowing my luck is not a good decision but I just really am confused about this whole thing.

Sounds to me like you just might have had BOTH an asthma attack AND a HEART attack! That description of an "elephant sitting on your chest" is exactly how my sister described her TWO heart attacks, and the fact that you had pain down both arms. You may have some major heart arteries almost completely blocked off. For heaven's sake, go see your doctor and get examined for BOTH problems. Please!

Please go to the doctor and find out what the problem is before you get another attack....don't wait.

Hello again. I just wanted to let you all know that I have an appointment with the doctor on Tuesday. SuziB, the mere thought of having a heart attack just scared me to death. I am ONLY 36!!!!!!! But I know it can happen. Also, my GYN has been monitoring my blood for severe anemia (which has improved significantly since December) and I am to redo a CBC this month to check my Plateletes which have been escalating since December. So I am going in for a check up with my family doctor and doing the CBC.

Thank you everyone!!!! You guys just may have saved my life.

: I've had asthma since I was a toddler. I'm only allergic to this planet. Every thing with fur and feathers, grasses, trees, dust, mold and mildew, even the sun . However I've learned to control my asthma most of the time. Primatene does pretty well. Because I made my mind up years ago that I wasn't going to let my allergies run my life, I've learned how far I can push myself. If you are around these things a little at a time you can build up a tolerance for what triggers the reactions. Works the same as allergy shots do. If I find something is bothering me I get close to it for a few min. then a little longer, a little longer ,until I find that it doesn't bother me so much.
