Well our whole system here is still backwards and needs much adjusting.

We weren't about to take government hand outs for nothing when we could pay our way which we did even if we couldn't we don't do that but too many people do that live high on the hog and that is just not right. Case in point here: an elderly couple lost their State insurance here and they lost their food stamps too and are having a very hard time without it. They have been back and forth a million times but the system is working against the people who need help seems like and for the people who don't. But people like Jill said who have assets can get away with so much if they wanted to it's just crazy and the people that need a helping hand get crapped on. Like I said it's all backwards. I think the sliding scale based on your income is very fair but it only seems to involve some, not all and that's wrong too. Our local drug stores though do have to match Walmart prices for drugs so that's a good thing for the ones that are in that $4.00 RX bracket.

Well Lisa, it does take two to debate so it appears you are the one that is making this a major debate. I told you the way I feel and that is all. I am sorry you think things in life are not fair....sometimes people look at their glass as being half empty and others see it as half full. For any ones information I can tell you I know what it is like to be without a lot of necessities. Early in my marriage there was a winter we had practically nothing in our house to eat. I was pregnant at the time and it was not easy in those days to find a job while pregnant and I was too proud to ask for help. Well we made it through that winter but from then on I told myself no matter what, I would never get to that place again so I saved every penny I could when I could and learned a whole lot about being frugal. I would have loved to own a dog or horses but I chose to first pay our bills and put what was left, if any in savings. What I am trying to tell you and not being mean or nasty about it is that sometimes there is a need to make different choices if we are in a bind. I know what it is like to pay for high priced insurance and I know, now, what it is like to live on a fixed income and have everything else go up in cost. I am not being mean by stating these things even if you or anyone else thinks I am. I do not live in luxury and I am going to resent it awfully if I have to give my horses up just because everything gets too high to afford them. I would just like to be able to keep some of what I have and not pay it all out in taxes to cover all the entitlement programs that have come about. I do hope you can understand. No debate...just discussion so each understands the other. Had company all day so wasn't on the computer. What would you want me and others to do to help you? Mary

PS I do think this is a land of opportunity for anyone that wants it and I love it here reagrdless of the unequalness I get.

Mary I am not sure why everything turns into a major debate with you? But if you are asking me do I think our country is run logically of course not. Do I think rich people on welfare is ol of course not but it happens every day. Do I think that criminals and petifiles being allowed ot live near schools is ok Of course not. Do I think that turning offenders into victims is ok of course not. Do i think living in a country were what color your skin is or your sexual orintation is something others see as cause for death of course not. DoI think living in a society where children are killing eachother daily is fair of course not -- Do I think it is fair that many are off dying daily for our country while others abuse the rights they are fighting for and stand for of course not. Tust me if i needed medical help the last place I would come to look is this judgmental place that is now called the forum. I was simply asking a question as I have said several times already! Do I think most things in life are fair of course not but that is the way it is all we can do is deal with the hand we were given the best we can

I guess I have nothing else to say to you other then Happy Thanksgiving ~if I was a praying person I would pray for you

No, I didn't say people with assets can get away with so much, but there are people with all levels of assets who can and do bilk the system.

Personally, I'm not sure I think a sliding scale IS fair. I feel like why should I have to help out people who maybe haven't tried and worked as hard as I have? It's almost like being penalized for being successful. It's not the people who truly do try their best I don't want to help, but I feel like there's a bigger number sitting back because they know they will be helped.

I will agree that there are people with all level of assets that bilk the system [and even those who don't have any assets.]Our system may not be perfect but who gets out and makes the changes? I truly admire any person who works hard and has taken upon themselves to pay their way in this life...it isn't always easy but it can be done. Many times I think more educational programs on how to handle what one earns and living within ones means would do more good than all the entitlement programs that are enacted. I know there are people who really need help financially but what I hate to see is people who don't live within their means complain that the government [we the people] aren't doing enough for them. I am very much against allowing people to have the luxurys in life and yet want the entitlement programs to meet thier necessities. This is what I think is UNFAIR. Some people seem to have it backwards in that they think what they earn should go for the luxurys in life while necessities are to be met by others. Many times someone will get stuck and think "oh lfe isn't fair becaue I don't have as much as the next guy" seemingly thinking that is the way it has to be. I too have thought at times, we re being penalized because we have worked hard for what we have. I have always thought I want to do my part in paying taxes for the things they are supposed to cover and which everyone can benefit from.....I just don't like paying out hard earned money and having it wasted on so many things. I would truly like to see some education programs for living within ones means before entitlement programs are given. Education can be the key to success. JMHO Mary

Mary,

I had read on the other thread about the poverty level, that you had posted that your husband was in the militaryk, and only paid $11 for the birth of your child. Is he a retired Military personel, and I beleive you had said you are on Social security and medicare now that you are retired, or your husband. So are your benefits through the military? Just curious as if this is the case, these benefits are all paid by EVERYONE's taxes, to me that would seem like a entitlement.

Not that I am against the military, as my father is just now retiring and has been too 2 tours of active duty for both Desert Storm and the one in Iraq (42 years of dedicated service). I am all for supporting our troops and think that if they have served our country, by all means they deserve any type of care we can offer.

Jennifer, My hubby was in the AirForce when we were first married and got out a couple years after we were married.

we receive No benefits from the military...none at all! We have been married 49 years so that was a long time ago. Yes, we are at the age that we can draw our funds from Social Security which we have paid into for over 50 years and we do pay for our medicare [there are people who think it doesn't cost us a dime but it does] and also pay a hefty supplement for what medicare won't cover. Social Security was started for the purpose of having something available when people retired . We paid for it and draw according to what we paid in, no more no less. Social Security is something that has been badly used by the government for things it was never meant for. It was supposed to be like a savings account that working people paid into for when they turned 65 years of age. I don't see Social Security as a give away program to the aged for it is something we put into for all the years and are finally getting some of it back. Do you think it is wrong for older people to draw their Social Security after 50 years of paying into it? I would have loved to have not had it taken out of our wages and been able to invest it instead [could have had a better return on it] but we didn't have that choice.

I see you are able to ask personal questions even though you thought it was terrible that someone else would ask something like "are you working full time and have some medical coverage through work?" I think you are upset because I feel there are too many give away programs for those who don't work while the rest of us do. I do resent paying for someone elses necessities while they spend their money on the fun things that many of us do without. I think it is wrong that people expect a free ride when there are opportunites for them. Like I have said before, I do not mind helping those who truly need it but when people are buying horses, going to Nationals, other horse shows etc. and then expecting others to pay for their necessities I do get upset. If people can pay for their horses vets and their dogs vets it seems they should also be able to pay for their own medical first. It is none of my business what others do as long as they are paying their way, and I highly respect the people who do. We do pay taxes that go for other peoples necessities while they spend their money on other things.....I see it all the time. I know of people who are on food stamps spend money at Casinos. How do I know, because we go to them once in awhile for a cheap meal. Maybe you think we were on an entitlement program when we were in the service and received the cheap medical services but I don't see it that way because it was just part of the pay for doing the job which didn't pay much. I hope this information has helped you clear up whatever was troubling you. Mary

I guess what is troubling me is that no one asked you to pay for thier health care and yet you feel the need to do a personal attack because someone shows horses???? HUM... there are alot of people on here who sacrifice other things to be able to show, maybe it is not important to you but to them it is. Everyones life is about sacrifice to enjoy what they enjoy. I don't like paying for other peoples things either, I am a very hard core Conservative Republican, I don't beleive in all the entitlement programs as you call them. But I do beleive that everyone should have health coverage, in my perfect world I would do away with all welfare and give health coverage. I think it would be a heck of alot cheaper on the goverment, and would help business's to hire full time since they would not be paying into the persons health insurance benefits, but that is just me, you don't have to see it the same, but again that is my opinion.

I guess what just makes me nuts is that you feel the need to put on your signature that you are entitled to your opinion, well so am I, and so is the rest of the forum. But whenever someone else has something to say that you don't agree with you have to have the last word and fight till the death instead of accepting that you don't have to see things eye to eye. In every post I read you are filled with anger, for this I am sorry for you. I know I have seen in many post that you are a christian woman. I am too and would hate to think that I come off the same way you do, as a Christian I would hope that we exuberate love, kindess, and most of all HOPE. Not saying that we don't get fired up at times, because I definately do, but not in every single post!

Jennifer

Mary for the LAST TIME I am tired of feeling like I have to defend myself to you some lonely bitter woman who has nothing better to do then argue and feels she has to have the last word

And now since you had to ONCE AGAIN IMPLY you are somehow paying anything for me or that I am on any type of goverment program I will have to explain myself one last time.

I am so tired of you implying YOU are somehow paying ANYTHING FOR ME- I went to Nationals becouse I have DONE WITHOUT I save up my money I budget- MARY our business since you seem to NEED TO KNOW my financial status well let me start by saying my husband has a plumbing buisness in CA we started it with 25 bucks and his 10 years experience. Now there are 3 trucks running and the business does well over 3/4 million a year Could we have made better investments along the way yes we could have we were young when we started this buisness with AGAIN NO HELP FROM ANYONE and I am sure like many others we made some mistakes somethings we would have done differently. However even thru that we have built up a succesful buisness and put in tons of blood sweat and tears like many others have to make it. This makes me NO BETTER then someone who had a run of bad luck or didnt have the chance for whatever reason to be able to do what we did. Or who had it and lost it or is still working to have it. I dont assume I am paying for them..

Now of course things have changed MARY we live in a different state them him now. I also work FULL TIME I am raising 2 girls and sending one thru college. SO yes things are always tough when you are raising children on your own. My choice to live in a seperate state from my husband doesnt need to be explained to you however I am sure that will be in your next 10 posts

I pay into Social Security and pay my taxes every year as well you are no better then me. I am sure there are years Mary we have paid MORE INTO THE SYSTEM THEN YOU HAVE yet I am not here saying hey wait a minute this person should be allowed to go to horse shows this one shouldnt this one should have one horse this one 5

IN fact you are using Social Security and according to most studies what I should get and PAID INTO wont be there for me so in a way mary I AM PAYING FOR YOU- my taxes as well as yours go to Medicaid YET I AM NOT HERE REPEATEDLY complaining I AM PAYING FOR YOU and trying to HUMILIATE AND SHAME YOU

I am not sure what you feel I need to show you to get you off of these personal attacks on me and my finances and parenting choices perhaps really Mary you need to get a life and not worry so much about mine. I assure you I have now and always will take care of my own and am doing a darn good job of it at least according to all teachers, adults ect that have met my children.

NO need to even respond although I am sure you will- having to get that last word in and continue to tear people down and such but just so you know I will be blocking you (along with half the forum who already has) so no need to waste everyones time as I wont see your further attacks. I have tried to be civil to you- tried to make peace with you tried to reach out to you, tried to understand your side - All to no Avail - You just choose to be angry, spiteful, bitter, mean and combative

I do resent paying for someone elses necessities while they spend their money on the fun things that many of us do without.
