Its such a mess!! Our neighbors are great and I do like this particular dog as she guards not only my neighbors yard, but part of ours. The part that our minis live on. Here lately she's become particularly agressive even towards my husband and myself.

Last night while we were out feeding the horses, our boxer Maggie was out with us. Maggie is an "indoor girl" with attitude. Well the neighbors dog ventured onto our property and started barking and growling at us. I told Maggie to run her home as Maggie has done hundreds of times before. This time our neighbors dog held her ground. We were all stunned and as soon as I saw what was about to happen I called Maggie back and she started back, but it was too late. That flipping dog bit her on the butt. One puncture.

Being a boxer she is not only physically hurt , but emotionally she is a wreck too. I took her to the vet today for antibiotics and to get her shots that were due last month (just to be on the safe side). Doc said the wound should heal on its own. At that time this morning I agreed, but at this point and time I'm not liking the way that it looks but than again I am not familiar with how bites heal. My gut is telling me to get a small syringe and flush it with betadine. The flesh around the puncture is white. It smell horrible and she is licking it profusely. I flushed it with diluted iodine last night (all I had on hand at that time).

My question is : Is this how this wound should look. White flesh, stinky and deep red hole?? I have to run to town so I think I'll pick up the betadine and clean it out.

Thanks

HELLO,

I AM NOT A VET EITHER, BUT WHEN OUR DOG GOT BITE BY OUR NEIGHBORS DOG YEARS AGO WE USED NEOSPORIN ON HIM. ALSO OUR NEIGHBORS PAID FOR THE VET BILLS.

KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON IT SO IT DON'T GET INFECTION IN IT. WE HAVE BOXER TOO, THEY ARE GREAT. WE HAVE 8 PUPPIES BOXER THAT ARE 2 WEEKS OLD NOW.

I HOPE SHE GETS WELL SOON.

TAKE CARE,

MELISSA

If the dog licks at it continuously, from my experience with dog bites (I am not a vet), the outisde will become white. Maybe give you vet a call, they may recommend putting a halo thingy on her so she can't lick and chew at it.

HI. I am sorry your dog got bit...I am a registered veterinary techician and work for an animal ER clinic..we see a lot of DFW (dog fight wounds).

I would take her back to your vet for a recheck. Sometimes all the licking can make the wound worse. She might need an e-collar (lamp-shade thing) It should not smell "bad" either. Dogs have weird skin that can pull away from the muscle area underneath. On the outside a puncture wound can look "not so bad", but when a vet goes to explore the wound, it can be HUGE...since you cannot see how much skin was torn away with just an outside visual.

Good luck with your dog! Pam

 Sorry to hear about your girl. (I'm not a vet but have had some experience with dog bites in animals) I would deffinately take the dog back to the vet. The wound shouldn't smell bad. There maybe more damage than what is known. So, before you do anything to the wound with betadine, peroxide or neosporin, I would deffinately take the dog back to the vet and ask for a cone collar. Also ask the vet what you should use to clean it, if anything at all.

No it should not smell "stinky".........I'd also recommend a vet to recheck it.

I also hope that you have spoken to your neighbors about this and about their dog's change in behavior.

Thankyou for all of the replies. I ended up filling it up with animax ointment. That combined with the oral antibiotics she is on seem to be doing the trick. So far so good.

Our neighbors are wonderful people and have been very concerned about Maggie.

again, Thankyou

Something you might try. We had a horse who decided it was his turn to need the vet so cut himself just above the hoof.

The vet had us flush his "boo boo" with a mix of 1/2 betadine and 1/2 peroxide. He wasn't thrilled but it did heal very nicely.

I am not a vet, but one of our dogs got into a fight many years ago. What we had to do was fill the wound with an antibiotic to help it heal. Also by doing that it kept it open to drain which is important. I beleive I had to do this 2 times a day. It has been a long time since this happened, so can't remember what the vet had me use and how often/long. But definately check with your vet about this. And like the others, no it shouldn't smell bad.

Give your girl some extra hugs.
