I totally respect the opinion held by those who would never shoot a running dog. I agree the owner is to blame but, if and when you see your horses running in absolute terror from a dog or dogs maybe already injured or worse....a gun comes in mighty handy. I take no pleasure in killing anything but I do what needs doing to keep me and mine safe always.

That is fine to take the dog to the pound IF you can SAFELY catch it. I have seen some dogs that are not even leash trained and would flip out or bite if they were put on one (stupid owners again)

Did the dog owners pay for your goats? The vet bill on your mini?

Here it is legal to shoot dogs that are chasing livestock. However, if you dont have the heart to do that, GET IT ON FILM and sue the dog owners for the losses!! Not only that, but losses that future offspring would have brought and anything else you can think of. That is usually the only way to get through people's thick skulls, is through the pocketbook, when they not only dont care about their own animals by allowing them to run loose, but certainly dont care about yours either!!!

I have had to 'remove' dogs in the past- sure dont like doing it, but it's better than seeing the end result with the livestock!

Let me guess, the dog has been 'removed' now, and I wonder if the owners have even WONDERED where their dog is?! Hopefully they wont go out and get another to replace it!!

P.S. Just edited to note that a dog that is in a frenzy chasing or killing animals can turn on YOU too, not making it possible to catch it and safely put it somewhere!!! I have seen this happen more than once!

I am a BIG dog lover, but when it comes to one going after my horses.....I would do anything to protect them , I don't own a gun but if I did....I think I might do the 3 S's. The thing is, you must never let anyone know... because if you think the dogs are or were a threat... a human is even worse, there could be repercussions, so you must play dumb, you don't know what happened to them!

Sorry....

What surprises me is the extent of members here who come across this problem and the amount of loose dogs in different states. It just is not tolerated here by the authorities because dogs aren't allowed to roam, they get picked up and the owner is fined, if they can find the owner otherwise the dogs end up at the Humane Society to be re-homed. I have only had one episode here where two dogs showed up and they were running the fence line. Put a call into animal control and they were here within 20 minutes and carted the dogs away. I guess we either have less dog population or owners that look after their dogs better, keep them on their own property. I truly feel for those of you who have lost livestock to these roaming dogs

It's the owners of these dogs that need a swift kick in the pants and a BIG fine. I know my girlfriend was visiting Texas a few months ago and she said it truly saddened her to see the abandoned dogs all over the place
