Hello all,

I am doing some research for my Horticulture class. Do any of you work at, or know of any Horticulture related job I can do research on? I have to have two topics with a short report on each. It is worth 100 points! It should be fairly easy when I have picked my topics though. That is the part I'm having trouble with.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Sam

Sam,

We own and operate a small greenhouse business. There are several jobs you can research fairly easily. One area would be an owner, there are several types of operations from retail to larger retail/wholesale to huge wholesale growers. Another area is one of more a specific job and that is a grower. this would be a hired person that basically ias in charge of growing the crops. They can be quite varried from growers who specialize in only crop to growers that say oversee rooting cuttings to growers that will be in charge of a 100 crops that may cover 20 acres of greenhouse.. Other areas might be some one in the landscaping industry. Or even a nursery operator. And always a horticulture option would be farmers as most grow some type of crops.

Good luck with your project.

Interesting topic!

How about Tissue Culture? You can probably contact Dan Heims of Terra Nova Nurseries in Oregon. He's a very nice man and extremely knowledgeable. If he's not receptive than pm me and I'll refer you to a great woman who operates her own facility here in Ontario that I'm sure would help you out.

Also, another interesting topic would be new plant development and I believe that Spring Meadow Nurseries would be a good source. They also deal with plant patents. Walter Gardens also introduces new plant material and generally pretty good stuff.

How about the 'heads of state' that decide on changing plant names on us? Just when I've learned how to pronounce it correctly someone goes and changes it completely!

Seed producers? How they collect, clean and distribute those fine petunia seeds is beyond me?????

There are two very fascinating nurseries in the states that would be very interesting. One is Heronswood and the other is Plants Delight. They carry the must unusual stock and their catalogues are extremely interesting reading.

Contact a Director of Horticulture of any Royal Botanical Garden and investigate his position?

Ahhh...I could go on and on.

Good luck!

P.S. You could also use the IPPS and PPA as sources of info. (International Plant Prop. Society and the Perennial Plant Association.)

:saludando: See if you have a master gardner program in your area. If not get in charge of a nursery close by and talk to the owner and the help.. they can pracitaly write your papers for you by answering questions.
