to my neighbors to wear a helmut when they ride.

But...........did they listen nope.

Was coming home yesterday and came upon my neighbor walking with one of her dogs. Normally I would just slow down and wave.

ut for some reason I stopped and said are you okay?

She turned and looked at me and Oh my God, her face was covered in blood and she said I don't know.....

I of course was calm and started yelling oh my God get in the car! get in the car! She said I don't think I can...

Got her and the dog in the car loaded down with groceries. And headed around the corner to her house.I said what happened? She said her new horse thru her and kicked her in the chest. Now we're at her house next to mine, with her gate closed and her other 5 ugly dogs at the gate barking their heads off and jumping and growling.

Her horse is running around stepping on the reins and getting legs entangled ,you can imagine.

Okay I don't know whether to try to get the horse first or get her into the house and calling 911, of course a normal person it would be the person but well I am not normal.

I said should I try to get the horse? As he's only now about 6 feet from the car. SHe said I am having trouble breathing, oh crap, I am half out of the car, I get back in and put it in gear, now she is getting out of the car saying I think he will come to me and he did.

Now what do we do? I now have the horse and tell her get in the car only God knows what I am going to do I can't open the gate with the gestapo there.

She says take horse up thru the pasture with the llamas and the sheep and put it in the stall and just pull bridle off.

Oh boy here I go with the guard llamas and one horse up half a darn mountain sweating bullets and wondering if she is dying while I am doing this.

I get thru all the gates and up to the barn. I just could not turn that horse in the stall with the expensive saddle still on, so unsaddled him and realized I hadn't unsaddled a horse in about 30 years.

Lots of new straps and rigging I hadn't seen before and all the time thinking is she still breathing in the car.

I got him in the stall naked. and went huffing up to the house in the meantime she had walked up to the house with the dogs. I don't know how.

But now they are at the gate to the house from the barn.

I can't see her, everything in me is saying DON'T open that gate with those dogs there, but I am calling her and no answer. I picture her on the ground not breathing and it's my fault.

I start to open the gate and she appears and says Bonnie don't open that gate with that blue eyed dog there.

OKAY with me.

She had managed to get the dogs inside and called our other neighbor who is the neighborhood nurse.

Boy was I glad to see her.

Anyway she has a busted up arm and her shoulder torn all to heck after having it operated on last year, broken ribs back injuries etc.

Please wear a helmut and a vest would be great. I feel so bad for her.

Listen to your mom.............

Oh wow!!!!! How scary was all that, sheeesh! Sounds like she was one lucky chickypoo that you showed up.

Oh my gosh, she is lucky you were there. I'm with you, even though they look foolish, where the helmet!!!

of course a normal person it would be the person but well I am not normal.

When I shattered my wrist helping a friend doctor her anglo filly she had the same dilemma. She's a ambulance attendant and trained to take care of injured people but she was torn between me and her injured (and now loose filly. I said "HORSE!" So you aren't all that abnormal

just an animal lover. Lucky for your neighbour that you happened along when you did.

You know, Bonnie...this lady is going to have a great story to tell people after this...if she remembers it all.

She's just lucky to have you there to help her.

Oh man that sounds like a heck of a day!! You really made me think about how bad do I want to deal with my 4 year old mare that I don't really trust. . . helmut or no helmut. Yikes.

Ok, and the 2nd thing is - and I SWEAR I'm not trying to be sarcastic, (I promise!) but I know I can't be the only one thinking it - couldn't you have "told" those dogs you were safe? Or doesn't your gift work that way? Again I PROMISE I'm not being a jerk, I've actually considered using your talent a time or 2!!!

Your neighbor is So so lucky you were there Bonny-

I have to add in here-

I am a big horse person who Does ride with out a helmet, on One horse. That's my 18 year old morgan/quarter horse mare who I teach 4 year olds on. (In my avatar, as a peacock with me ;P)

All my students Must wear them, no matter who, what, or where.

I even make my adults wear them, much to their dismay.

I have seen some Horrific accidents, truly horrific accidents, all at horse shows to date, and all, thanks to a helmet were 'minor'. (Broken limbs are nothing to a brain injury, therefore minor to me.)

Oh lord.........That lady was very very lucky........especially that you showed up.

Good grief Bonnie, what a scare! Good thing you came along! I hope she has a full recovery and no long term problems, but sounds like she already has problems with her shoulder and all.... And glad you didnt get dog bit or something either! I bet she was glad to see you come along too and will not forget your kindness!

She was very, very lucky that you were able to help her! I hope she is doing ok. Is no fun going through such an accident... I know.

However for future note.. I would of called the Fire department first to get the peramedics out. That is what hubby did.. once I was in the ambulance,,, then DH & DS got the horses before they came to the hospital.

When a person is hurt in a horse back riding accident..minutes count.

I will also tell you...if I wasn't wearing my Helmet..I would not be talking to you today. They can make that big of difference!

So you are right Bonnie,, a helmet can save you from becoming a drooling Veg or worse.

And if you get a Vest,, make sure it is "Beta 3" tested. All the other ones are no better than wearing a Jacket.

I always ride with a Helmet..and am wearing a Beta 3 safety Vest most of the time.

This never ceases to amaze me. One dump on the head, I say...accident. The second, I say where is the helmet...the third....I say, can you even hear me?

My friend's daughter was dumped off her horse last fall, and someone found her...she had a major concussion, overnight hospital stay, etc.

In May, Same thing, minus the hospital stay, but a doctor visit.

End of June, Dumped off and kicked in the head. At fifteen three huge bumps in the head could cause serious damage.

Her mom said no more of that horse. New horse and helmet is the only way the girl is allowed to ride! It is crazy.

Your neighbor was lucky you found her!

I know you are not being sarcastic. But no these dogs are not dogs that you can reason with. They go right to the red zone and don't back off. She is looking at serious trouble one day and we all know it.

But she doesn't so I could have talked for an hour and it would still be the same outcome.

It took 3 seperate bites on 3 different people for her to take action on one of her dogs.

But this is her journey.

Hugs

Bonnie

There are no coincidences, you were meant to help her and you did well!

I imagine that dog is like some people - when there's a lot of yelling going on, there's very little communicating!

Thanks for that information, Shari. I never ride without a helmet. I don't understand the reasons people give for not wearing one. I hadn't even thought about wearing a vest while riding, unless you're an eventer. I suppose that would be important especially on the trails with lots of hard obstacles. I didn't know there was a test protocol for vests ("Beta 3"). Good to know.

I have a good friend that has a QH that has bucked her off numerous times (and she's been injured). She does not wear a helmet even knowing his behavior issues. The crazy thing is that she wears a helmet when she's downhill skiing. Huh? That just does NOT make sense to me. She can't really give a reason as to why she wears it for one and not the other.

I may not ride much anymore; but just like wearing a seatbelt while driving my car, I wear a helmet when I drive. I almost bought myself a jumping vest yesterday (this one had no "tail flap") for when I do combined driving, but I wasnt buying a vest that didn't fit.

Yes... Im just a little safe conscious

Helmet on the head + Cell phone on the body

= Absolute minimum equipment for riding or driving.

...and I've been looking into a vest for CDEs.
