Hello,
I am new to horses (early this summer), I purchased an horse that had been a successful driver years ago, however had not driven in years. I have been taking it slow, reading, following along in the forum, and ground driving- many hours!!! Today was the first time I hooked him to a cart- What a blast!!!
It all went well, He is out of condition for driving so only ran him about 10-15 min. (for his sake not mine, I was ready to keep going). At first I toke him into our hay field and then rerouted to our level yard. My concern was that we live on a ridge- many grades, our hay field is rolling hills ( as close as they get to rolling hills in SE Ohio) and he had trouble stopping on any grade, his rump really dropped to be able to stop the cart. He wanted to get a run for it and keep his speed up to get up the hill. Is this just a conditioning problem? His is a 33 inch mini and a very strong stallion , our cart is a basic easy entry cart and I am an average 150 pound women. Do I just keep running him on level (which is very limited to me) ground? Or am I overly concerned? Also at what speed do you increase the time spent working? Thank you for your help, I have enjoyed following the forums and have already learned so much from them.
