No, that's awesome, Cheryl! Thank you. Sounds like my roads around here are...*drumroll please*...chip seal! Only they don't bother to seal it. They just roll out a new layer (covering all the good grass side area last time), dump rock all over it and leave. It's heck on the horses for weeks!

I'm assuming cement is the stuff they floor buildings in, like convention centers and such? That stuff is so scary with horses! I do a harnessing demo in the Flower Building at the Cowlitz County Fairground every spring and am always worried about Kody's safety as he slips terribly even at a calm walk. They lay a carpet down for him to stand on.

Cement (aka concrete, although there is a difference. Concrete is made from cement, gravel and water) is usually "white" (unless they put "color" in it for decorative purposes). Around here, all sidewalks and the Interstate system are concrete, as well as some driveways of people who can afford it. (Our driveway is gravel. Less runoff, more dirt in house...

Absolutely correct, Myrna two different things with cement being a mix of wondrous things including silica, lime and I forget what all else. They are all mixed together and kilned, then pulverized into a fine-ish power, then added to concrete (and better mortar).

Concrete is a mix of aggregate - sand and gravel - cement, and water, preferably the least amount of water possible.

For my own part, I look at the ground and what I can make of it for my horses's feeties/hooflettes, whether they are shod or naked, age of the horse, his condition, where he will going and what he will be doing. So, while I understand that there are variations on themes, with regard to road surfaces, I kind of lump them in categories of how they will affect feet. Sad but true.

Like you, gravel driveway. Less runoff, more rocks in the house, better homeland for fire ants.

Another advantage to gravel (though less related to driving horses): our gravel road and driveway provide traction in all but the deepest snow and even some ice. Two of our neighbors who paved their long, steep driveways have to park their cars on the road in threatening weather, making it difficult for us to get past...grrrr.
