So I'm looking through sale board listings and I come across two dwarf miniatures from the same farm. They are asking $2,500 for each of them.

It makes me wonder two things.

First... do people actually pay that much for a dwarf.

Secondly... If people do pay that much for dwarfs, is it encouraging farms who have dwarfs to repeat the breeding.

I went to an auction in this area last year, and if their prices were any indication, then yes dwarfs can go for BIG bucks. IMO those who breed for $$$ will breed and sell anything there's a demand for.

I have been at the exotic auction and, yes, I have seen them bring $$$$...BUT...they do STRESS just what a dwarf is , the work involved and NOT a childs pet as they don't have a good life expectancy...that I have to give then kudos for...but always sad to see the lil darlings go through

I think it is disgusting to say the least. I am not sure people know what heart ache and expense they could be buying. I have seen several dwarves sold at auction. Most of them were in fair physical condition, I mean not to badly deformed in the legs. The last one I saw was being sold by a well known breeder. It was a tiny perlino colt. His front legs were so bad he could barely stand. I started crying just thinking of the torment this little guy was going to have to live through. You could see the pain in his face. I had to look away and not watch it hurt me so bad to look at the little guy in such pain and so helpless. I was sickened by it. He sold for over a thousand bucks. You could see that the breeder handler looked ashamed of either what they were doing or having a dwarf, I don't know. I thought this person was a good breeder now I know its just for the money. They breed and breed just to make a living with no thought of the animals.

Just to clarify my feelings on this. If I ever have a dwarf and cannot keep it, I will place it in a forever home at no cost. I would never want to make money off of such a thing.

They were advertised as dwarves. Lots of people bid on them. I can't say it is the fault of the auction but that of the people selling them.

I know it is just my own ethics and beliefs but I feel any living thing I bring into the world is my responsibility to be sure to do what is right by the animal formost. But then I don't breed many because I have a hard time letting them go and I can't keep all of them.

thank you for your honesty... I agree and have also seen this happen. makes me sick also. Greed..I hate it ...its all about money for some

How awful! Just curious, do they have them advertized as Dwarfs? Or are they trying to pass them off as regular minis?

They were advertised as "Dwarfs, with excellent form, will make wonderful pets" How sad and misleading. In the pics they do not stand correctly and look uncomfortable. I've never had a dwarf but if I did it would be given to a home with the time and funds to properly care for it. Honestly I probably would become so attatched to it, I could never let it go.

Just saw the ads! Yes, they are openly listed dwarves, and YES, for $2500

I agree with this, they do bring up the problems of the dwarfs and people still pay over 2000 for them and as for whether it is encouraging people to breed for it, that is another yes because we were looking at a mare and the people made a point of mentioning that she had produced a dwarf and made it sound like a wonderful thing, needless to say we didnt buy the mare but it just showed us how horrible it is that the dwarfs are bringing so much money.

There is a farm that sold two dwarves to a lady that I now trim for.

She told me he is a big breeder and is still repeting these crosses.

I know a woman that purchased one sold as an AMHA. For a dwarf he is very nice and thank god healthy....people will breed anything if it makes money.

That's so sad

It makes me angry that some folks insist on breeding for dwarfs and not look at the future outcome of that little one. And to think that they maybe sold to a home where they are future breeding stock. I wish there was something that could be done about breeders who do this. Shame on them for knowingly breeding for dwarfs! That's not a true respectable breeder in my eyes.

I do not agree with selling them however there are buyers for everything.

I did own a dwarf and know how expensive and time consuming it can be and also know how rewarding it can be.

I am not sure people "breed" for them as it is still a genetic roll of the dice you can breed the same pair 10 more times and not get another dwarf

I have my own personal choices and feelings about repeating a cross but many have done so without another one so I am not sure anyone "breeds" for dwarves
