Hi there!

So I was bored and just started looking through some local horse ads and I came across an ad of a 2 year old mini that to me looks dwarfy. Now I could be wrong, but bothers me because they are selling him as a stallion, asking for LOTS of money for him and saying how beautiful his one blue eye is and that he will stay so small! Scared cause to me that they are trying to sell him as a stud and someone might breed him or buy him not knowing the responsibility, cost and not to mention heartbreak a dwarf can be...however i could be totaly wrong!!

We rescued a dwarf who we adored for a few years before he sadly passed away due to complications due to his dwarfism.

Lol I’m kind of hoping you guys will tell me I’m crazy and he’s fine or else I might be making a drive to bring him to live at my house and geld him.....

I don’t want to put the picture up here and offend anyone by bad talking their horse, but if you can give me your opinion please pm me and I’ll send you the pic. I worried about this guy and think if he is he needs to find a home that can care for his needs.

I don't feel qualified to comment on the photo, but I wonder if those of you who are looking at it could educate the rest of us. Could you post on here whether you think he is a dwarf or not, and why (body proportions, head size, etc.)?

I guess my question is do you intend to pay his high price if he is a dwarf?

Or plan on telling them look so many people think he is a dwarf who saw his picture so you should not sell him for that much?

I am not sure how well that would be recieved but either way I guess I am just wondering what you see or hope the outcome would be for this horse you saw on a sale ad?

Not trying to be rude but just saying.. it would be a sad and yet busy busy day if we all decided to crituque who should be sold as breeding quality or not LOL

I looked at the photo and do not believe he is a dwarf, but definitely not a stallion quality horse that should be adding any of his genes into the miniature horse world.

The picture was of him in winter woolies so it was hard to tell. His legs seemed a bit short but the picture was just not good and he was full of fuzz and had a hay belly. I think a picture of him without the winter woolies would be needed to really see his proportions. However, living in north dakota, I know how terrible the horses can look with a good 5" of hair and I do have a dwarf mare with minimal characteristics so have studied up on it quite a bit-I don't see those dwarf characteristics in the stallion.

Winter hair can be very deceiving...............as well.

I looked at the first photo & thought the same as the others who have stated their opinions. VERY hard to tell from that one photo due to the very long hair & terrible shot with the head looking at the camera, making it look BIG, and dwarfy.

I have now seen the several new photos of this same horse you sent me, where he is shed most of the way out. He looks much better in these, altho definitely not show quality (in my eye, anyway). But he doesn't look dwarfy in these....just not as refined as you would like to see by today's standards.

I don't like his head,.....not as refined & dishy as I like, and he seems to lean more toward the body type of the older style minis (thicker boned)

Other than hat...his legs look to be in the proper porportion, doesn't "look" like he would have an underbite, and needs to lose some belly.(That can be done with proper nutrition & conditioning).

Don't know what they are asking for this boy...but you said "lots". With the market being what it is today, you should be able to get something much nicer for a lot less.

But if you are worried about him, and want to give him a good home....that is entirely up to you & how much you are willing to spend.

I would see if the breeder would consider a gelding price. I have cared for a dwarf before and would gladly open my barn doors knowing I could care and provide the care for a dwarf. Also the reason I was asking is because I know of a rescue that is about 5mins from my place that takes in minis whether its a rescue from the animal society or someone who has provided wonderful homes, but just can no longer keep their mini for whatever reason. They specialize in dwarfs and have found many wonderful knowledgeable homes for dwarfs. I know that a few years back they nicely approached a breeder around our area that was actually breeding dwarfs.

I have been e-mailing someone on the forum and talking with the rescue as to how to nicely approach this lady if he was indeed a dwarf. So far the e-mails I have got from people after seeing the second shot of pics are 50/50 as to if he is dwarfy or not.

My minis are pet quality and my other mini is a one eyed wild foster horse (from the rescue I mentioned above) that was headed for auction. I am not here to bash other people horses, however there is so much talk about dwarfs and how to stop in and what we can do in the mini world. There sadly are breeders that just don’t see the dwarfy characteristics and breed or sell these animal to family’s that have no idea what they are purchasing or getting themselves into and it leads to heart break.

Like I said I’m not here to say, this horse has a low shoulder or his head isn’t refined enough to be a stallion because I don’t know enough about that and I don’t breed, but I do know there is a difference between breeding a pet quality (healthy just not show quality) mini that will never win a first place ribbon, but will win the heart of a little girl who thinks theyre the prettiest pony in the world VS. Breeding a horse with dwarfy characteristics. I do not mean to sound rude either, but i do not think a dwarfy looking horse should be sold as breeding stock. It is up to mini lover and breeders to make sure these animals are not bred and find homes that can care for them.

I was merely looking out for the interest of this mini if he was a dwarf and I turned her for a more expert opinion and to look at all angels before approaching this breeder. Yes I may offend her and she may hate me, but hey when we see the pictures online or hear the stories of people breeding dwarf and the poor foals produced that have no quality of life, well I tried to stop it. On the other hand maybe she will geld him and we can find him a proper home to care for his needs.
