I wrote the following email to Joanna Campbell, the author of the Thoroughbred series, back in July and she just wrote me back!!!
She wrote back that that was one of the most heart-warming emails she had ever received and she printed it off and taped it to her filing cabinet by her computer to remind her why she writes!!! Can you believe that? She was my hero when I was a kid. I wanted to write like her, I wanted to BE Ashleigh Griffen.Hello Joanna,
I was entering all of the books I have read into my facebook account and took a trip down memory lane while adding the books from the Thoroughbred series. I saw your website and, of course, could not help but send you a message telling you what your books have meant to me.
I loved horses from the time I knew what they were. When I was old enough to start reading novels, I received A Horse Called
Wonder, Wonder's Promise and Wonder's First Race for my birthday. From that day on, I was in love with thoroughbreds, racing and the world you created. I cannot possibly explain the joy and awe I felt whenever I picked up your books as a child. I am not 23 years old and very often think about that time of my life, when nothing could tear me from the adventures of Ashleigh and later Samantha and Cindy.
I continued to read the series after I was too old for them, because I could not bear to close that chapter of my life and no longer have those stories to look forward to. You inspired me to start writing, first by the pictures you painted in my head while I read, then by trying to recreate your world in my own fictional accounts of Townsend Acres and Whitebrook Farms.
I would like to thank you for what your books have brought to my life. They are still the books I think of when anyone asks "What were the most influential books, what did you love most when you were a child?"
Thank you for everything.
Lisa
