Im wondering if anyone on here has ever fractured any metatarsals in their feet before? I broke two last night out walking on the solid ground in the mare pasture where the ponies foot prints had frozen - you horse people know what i'm talking about however the nurses at the ER kind of looked at me like

How long until you were healed enough to walk on it? I've got a week off work and the work I do is pretty fast pace and physical. I'm not aloud to bear any weight on the foot until atleast Tuesday and have to make an apointment with a bone doctor for early in the week..

I've got a week off work, im wondering how the healing / recovery process was for anyone who has done this before too....

i have never broken a metatarsal, but i have broken my ankle! i feel for you! hugs and sending healing thoughts!

OK, I waited a while for someone more experienced to reply, but since no one did, here's my two cents. On Aug 11 I had radical bunion surgery where my first metatarsal was purposely broken, a piece removed then screwed into normal position with a plate holding everything together. There was a bunch of other things done in there as well, but this is the part that relates to your situation. First, it's PAINFUL! So make sure you take what they gave you or good old ibuprofen. I actually switched to ibuprofen after a few days because I didn't like the narcotic stuff and didn't think it worked that well anyway.

The main thing is to stay off it as much as you can, keeping it elevated, and when you are up, you should probably be using a orthopedic boot. It keeps you walking properly and unable to jar it as it's healing. Mine got a LOT of use, let me tell you, and it also got a bit stinky as towards the end I was cleaning stalls and doing other farm chores.

It got to be kind of a 'security blanket' and when I was given the OK to go without it, I was pretty nervous for a couple of days.

Even though these bones are in the middle of your foot, they still need the 6 weeks it takes to heal, so you'll be gimpy for a while. Just be careful and stay off it, elevate it and see if your doctor wants you in a boot.

Good luck and I hope it heals quickly for you!
