OK, The 4th of July, well, really the 5th this black cat showed up under my back porch. We haven't fed it or anything but we have the Dog door so Brandy can go out as she needs. This cat is now in my house. I have other cats that also go in and out and a couple of very small dogs that do not need the trama of a tender trap. This cat has been on my kitchen counter a couple of times and is hold up somewhere in the spair room that is used for storage so there are lots of hiding places. I have touched her a couple of times but she runs if you try to pick her up. She also growls the whole time you are trying to touch her. How would you get her out of the house for good as she does go in and out as she needs. I really do not want kittens. Not to say it is even a girl. But it has not been altered since there is no notch in it's ear (they do that with catch/nuter/release).

I would trap her with one of those live trap things. On the notch ear... I had some feral cats neutered on the trap neuter release program.. they forgot to notch the ears so that is not a definite sign, but if the cat is wild chances are it is not neutered yet..

I have a cat on my porch right now I have trapped and cannot find anybody yet to take her... Shelters are full, vets are booked for a month on the trap neuter release program. I have been trying to catch this girl for years, she is a kitten factory. I feel so sorry for the cats, but my funds have dried up. I did neuter quite a few cats on the program last year, it is amazing how much it costs to neuter wild cats even with a certificate and financial assistance. One vet insisted on pre-anesthesia blood work on our wild cat and even with the certificate it cost a bundle. We live on a farm in the middle of McMansions and we are a drop zone for kittens and cats. Like draining the ocean trying to deal with all the cats. good luck in catching your wild cat, you really don't want her going all over your house, she might have fleas and worms and goodness knows what. Nothing slippier to catch than a wild kitty. She will get hungry sometime.. I caught mine in a crate after feeding her in there for a few days with an open door.

Yep, feral cats are generally trapped in those live traps. Tuna works wonders. Line it with newspaper, and drape a towel over the top/sides leaving the entrance and locked back door uncovered.

Good luck,

Andrea

I would also try to catch him/her in a humane trap. Maybe when you know he/she is hiding in the spare bedroom, you could put the trap in and close the door so no other pets would be trapped? Poor cat. Black cats nearly never get adopted (though I have a gorgeous one and love her very much).

I wish you were here. We could use a "tough" cat. I hate using poison for mice/rats and the coyotes keep the wild cats down here so we never get strays.

You could call your local humane society and they will lend you the trap. Then take down and they should get her spayed and then send her out to me. I fired my barn cat last week.

If this cat actually lets you touch it, this is NOT a feral cat. This is someone's pet that is lost or dumped, and just upset about being in a strange area with strange people,etc.... Also, feral cats are as wild as can be and I dont think would ever volunteer to come and live in someone's house!

Can you take it somewhere and see if they can tell if it's fixed or not? (A male would be obvious) If you talk to it and try to get it a little more comfortable with it's surroundings there, you will probably be able to pet it and see if it's male, female, etc.....

And if you have a doggie door, this cat already knows how to use it- another thing that feral cats would have no idea about- this cat knows how to use it and you will not keep it outside as long as you have the door to use.

Sounds like it is just a really scared kitty that was probably dumped or something I think. Poor kitty.

Good points HGfarm... I didn't think about her saying she could touch the cat when I posted. I have a small feral cat colony here and even after years, I cannot really ever pet them. I feed them every day and provide shelters and fresh water, and only on occasion will they rub on you after several years of taking care of them. When you reach down to pet them, they bolt. My wild kitties that I have caught as kittens and have held them even for a minute eventually get friendly, however they still do not make good house cats unless you catch them very young.

The dumped kitties are even sadder than the feral cats because they look so sad and lost. I had one dumped here that took two weeks to catch. She kept avoiding me and just walked around in the corn field crying , it was pitiful. One day I saw her in the distance and called my kids to come see the lost kitty. As soon as the cat saw my kids she galloped over to us and started winding around the kids legs. She must have had children in her life that she loved. She has made my mother in law a great house cat, nicest one ever and gets to see our kids all the time, happy ending. go figure.

Just from personal experience dealing with feral cats and also working as a volunteer at our local shelter, I agree with "renting" a live trap for your little black kitty.

If you can have it checked by a vet and/or neutered.....I guess the rest is up to you whether you want to keep "her?" as a mouser or turn her over to a shelter.

BTW, Jill is right.....Black cats are harder to adopt out.

Black cats are harder to adopt out? I love black ones! Are there THAT many superstitious people out there? Dont they know it's bad luck to be superstitious?! LOL

I know that in the past in Washoe County they put a hold on black cats the closer it gets to Halloween. I guess there is a problem with rituals that happen that time of year. I think I will keep trying to catch her/him. I seem to be the only one that can touch her. I just have to figure out how to catch her in time for the bus to the vet on Wednesdays.

Get some nice smelly fishy canned kitty food.... and a crate. See if you can bribe the kitty into the crate to eat and close the door. Word of advice from personal experience.... if the kitty can spin around and come back out the door- you will never be able to bribe it in there again, LOL

Maybe leave a bit of food in there each day for a treat, and let the kitty go in and out and eat it and come back out- just be prepared when it's time to slam the door- they are quick and strong.

Or you may be able to bribe the kitty nicely to come to you with the same food..... where it will get over most of it's fear and let you pet it ok.

The easiest way would probably be to find one of those live trap things and then kitty wont associate you with being stuck in the horrid crate and thinking forever that you are one of the devil's henchmen.
