we dont have that problem really. we have coyotes, ive seen them and heard them. But they never seem to bother the horses. a couple years ago we had a pack that had a rabies outbreak and they were crazed. they got into our pasures but we didnt have anything in them at the time. One chased my mom across the yard and tried to get at her in the house. My mom was in our tack room and she had the door open. she turned around and there was a rabies infested coyote sittin in the door way. so she hit it with somthing and took off running for the house and barley made it in. she called the animal control and they came and shot it. it was scary but thank God we didnt have any minis or ponies then.

We also live in coyote country. There is a 5' tall fence that the minis stay in at night. I have a male and female great pyr. They do an awesome job of protecting the horses. They are very friendly towards people, but also know their job.

My friend uses full size jennies, she has never had an attack in 20+ years. She has 3 small dogs that go in the pasture with her when she checks her herd twice daily, and the donkeys don't seem to mind the dogs. But the dogs also know not to screw with the donkeys!!!

I would think if you got a young donkey and young great pyr, and raise them together, then you would be able to use both together.

Goos luck in your search. I know how nerve racking it is to hear them late at night. When we first moved, seemed like they would be howling in our back yard, but they were actually in the very back pasture. Their voices carry a long way in the open country.

I agree with Kelly and Jim,

we have the dogs and the jennies in our pastures and they work well together. And actually compliment each other as the dogs are normally asleep during the day and the jennies are asleep at night. Someone ask about mini jenny being used, we have some and they appear to have the same instict as the large ones do, but we have worried about them being too small for the job so run two to a pasture when we use them. seems to work okay.

good luck,

We have alot of coyotes here and have not had a problem with them at all. It's the dogs that give us trouble. We do have a mini donkey with our herd and I know to go out and check if he keeps braying and braying. We also have a Great Pyrenees on the other side of our property for the goats, she is awesome, very gentle but still gets the job done. We have an anatolian that is just to aggressive when anything comes by. We have 30 acres and have never lost a goat, chicken or horse to coyotes, now we have been attacked by stray dogs and lost all our chickens to them. Since we have added the guard dogs all has been great. If you can add a great pyrenees and a mini donkey you should be fine.

I'm really surprised by the people saying that they have or have had agressive Anatolian Shepherds. Mine is so very sweet, she loves kids and is super gentle with them. There was a group of little girls that came over a week or so ago for a birthday party (the birthday girl loves horses and they don't have any of their own so I said they could come over and see all the horses) and the ages ranged from seven to two years old, and Tanna was extremely gentle and friendly with all of them, even though they were strangers to her. Once when she got out of the field when the hay was being baled, she went straight to our closest neighbor's house and played with their two sons, ages 6 and 8, and my neighbor told me that the boys had a blast with her. All the people I know personally that have Anatolians are happy with their dogs. I guess you have to be really careful who you get your LGD's from, but all I can say is that my Anatolian is one the very best dogs I've ever had.
