I'm trying to figure out the weight of my minis for the safeguard worming product.

I tried using the formula from my miniature horse vet book(9.36x girth(inches) + 5.01x body length(inches) - 348.53) and the numbers I got I'm not sure about. For one of my boys I can kinda believe that he weighs 325lbs, little more than I think, but he did come our of winter pretty cunky. But my other gelding is quite low in the weight department and I just can't believe that he is 312lbs. His girth measured 46"(inch off for hair) and body length of 46.

SO, for others who have used this formula, how accurate is it??? Can I trust the number I get for giving medications??

Heres recent pictures of my boys, I know its impossible to tell weight through pics, but just so you can see them compared to weight.

Rhino(325lbs)

MacDuff(312, or so says the formula)

Thanks!

I have found that the formula heartgirth*heartgirth*lenght / 300 = is a good weight to determine weight. For my guys it seems to be rather accurate even on my little stubby legged girl. As for the accuarcy of any other formulas I am unsure. Though most of the formulas out there were designed for the larger horses and do not work as well for the minis.

I agree. That formula is pretty accurate. They are very deceiving on their weight. I wish I carried the weight that well

I'm not sure about Safeguard, but I do know you can heavily overdose with ivermectin with no side affects. I think it's like 10 times the listed dose. I know I dosed one mare with about half a tube (600+ lbs dose) and panicked. I called my vet, and he said keep an eye on her, but she was absolutely fine

As for safeguard it is safe to double dose on. So no worries there about overdoing it.

Gizzmoe, is the formula I put in my first post the saame as:

heartgirth*heartgirth*lenght / 300 =

If not, what is the heartgirth mean????

Here this will help you figure out where to measure. Though the formulation they have for the calculator will not work since it's a big horse formulation.

Horse Weight Measurments

Using the geldings measurements you provided. Which seem off to me somehow since they are all the same, which to me is odd lol. This is the weight I came up with

46*46*46= 97336

97336/300 = 324.25

Hey Paige...

I recommend a weight tape...more accurate...and easier to figure out...and if your grey horse 325...hes mucho overweight...my 37.5 gelding 341...and that suits him...so he needs to get some weight off...but I recommend a weight tape..way more accurate.

Hehe Katie, I actually measured the length of body wrong, so my horses where both over weight, hehe. When I used the correct measurements, they turned out to be 281.1 for Rhino(hes a little fatie right now, with all the hair he barely fits between the shafts

) and the other gelding was 262.

I have actually heard that weight tapes are very inacurate, but I may have to try one and see what they weight compared to the weight I have now!

Hmm I have never heard of them being wrong and my vet used to use one...they can be no more inaccurate than you taking the wrong measurement? All you do is stick themm around the hearth girth and voila....no measurement needed....
