I have a maiden mare this year and, well, I'm concerned. There are always a ton of risks in any foaling, but I'd like any tips, tricks, or hints you have about possible rejection. I did some stalking of old threads, and someone suggested giving banamine, which I hadn't heard of but I will be talking to my vet about.

Giving banamine helps with the pain, and pain can be one of the major causes of rejection, so I dose of banamine after foaling can be beneficial. I'd talk to your vet about when to administer, to ensure it doesn't interfere with "cleaning".

Thanks. I do intend to have a discussion with the vet when she comes for shots next month. I want to do all the research that I can now, just in case. This mare is sweet but she doesn't seem to have a lot of maternal instinct. I'm hoping she figures things out once the foal is born, but you never know. She is not having a terribly easy time with being pregnant.
