i often turn my big gelding out into the alfalfa field when i'm doing chores. as soon as he crosses the gravel lane and his feet hit 'green', his head goes down and he rarely wanders more than 10 feet in any direction. heck, i don't even put a halter on him. we are so far removed from any traffic, it's just not a worry.
after rebel had been here a few weeks and knew the routine, i thought it might be nice for him to go out with tuffy and munch a little green stuff while i did chores. i did halter him and left a lead rope on although i was confident he wouldn't stray. after all, he and tuffy are joined at the hip.
i opened the gate, slapped tuffy on the butt. as he meandered out to the field, i turned to lead rebel out. all i saw was a blur as he ran past me at warp speed. thinking he just wanted to get to the field where tuffy was, ohhh maybe 10 yards out, i stepped aside to avoid being mowed down. well, he didn't stop at tuffy. he didn't stop at the field. HE DIDN'T STOP!! never dreamed that little stinker could move so fast. with mane flying in the wind, tail up over his back and lead rope trailing up in the sky, he was OFF LIKE A SHOT, out of sight in a new york minute. now, we are surrounded by farm fields as far as the eye can see, there is virtually no traffic on our little country road unless you count slow moving tractors and combines.
tuffy looked up once in a while and nickered once. i ran down the lane to find rebel flying around the field behind a stand of trees. he was having such a great time, i didn't have the heart to rein him in. i let him run while i kept an eye on him. after about 10 minutes, it seemed a light went on his his head..."GRASS!! GREEEEEEN GRASS!! I'VE DIED AND GONE TO HEAVEN!!!" at that, he stopped dead in his tracks. i walked up to him, grabbed the lead and brought him back to where tuffy was grazing.
so now, every time i let them out, rebel is airborn for 10 minutes. that's my story and i'm stickin' to it!
