Every year we have thousands of these Aleutian geese spend time here.

This is just a small flock of them.

I love Canada geese. We used to have fifteen that lived here 24/7. One was so tame I could feed her from my hand and she would come when I called her. She would fly along beside the car whenever I drove out our lane.

Sadly she found a boyfriend and flew off.

The others either died off or left when we drained our pond to have it redone. Maybe some of them will return this year. The pond is done and filling up. :aktion033:

I thank you for thnking of me when you took that picture. I stopped in to visit our lady in the Hollow here in New York But when I return home later this afternoon I will save the picture and add it to all the others. I am far removed from the Pacific Flyway and those geese are a rare sight for me. Once again thanks. Geese (AKA Vic)

"Aleutian" Geese?? They're certainly beautiful, and look very similar to Canada Geese. What are the differences? (I'd look them up myself but I can't find my bird book.)

Back home again and just for "Sunnys" information the Aleutian Goose is one of the multitude of sub species of the Greater Canada Goose. Besides a slight difference in general body size their necks are shorter and the white neck banding is not as clearly defined in this sub species. Now tell me is it not a waste of time you have ones head filled with this trivial nonsense ?? You would think I had better things to occupy my mind.

Ba humbug l wish they would learn property lines if the barn doors are open in fall or spring there's always at least one of the things in there and l know from experience they get really big and mean when you chase them with a broom. Not to mention if there's a flock of them around they poop something awful all over the place. Farmers around here can't stand them there really hard on the fields when they land in big batches. Did l mention they poop all over...

cars trucks roofs fences dogs people chairs windows and so forth.

Thanks for the clarification, Vic. I quite like "trivial nonsense" like that, especially when it occupies the space of far less pleasant thoughts and memories.

I'm obviously an admirer from afar when it comes to the geese since they don't come in my barn and poop everywhere, nor do I have fields for them to ruin and poop all over. I just think they're beautiful birds and really liked the fact that they mate for life, until Vic burst that bubble with the truth. :bgrin See, Vic? Some of your "trivial nonsense" served to educate me a bit!

Relic does have a point. Geese (and many ducks) have been brought back for a serious decline in the late sixties and seventies. The birds have recovered to the point where they have become more than just a nuisance in many areas. Considering just last fall a commercial airliner caught a goose with its windshield while landing and the fear of sucking a goose or other birds into a jet engine is a real danger. In public parks where they congregate in between feedings it can tend to get a bit slippery underfoot which can tend to be a source of frustration. I guess the solution is to increase hunting pressure to keep them in check and moving along the flyway. In recent years they no longer all fly south for the winter. Just far enough south to find feed and open water and unless pressed go no further.

Soorry Deb it was meant in good humor and without malice but I understand.

Oh ya some of the farmers here really hate the geese.

In our local paper this morning theres an artical about them, I will go see if its on line and if it is I will come back on here and tell anyone that wants to read it how to find it.

OK I think this should take you to it.

Well it's nice to know l'm not the only one who doesn't like the things we back up to 160 protected acres owned by Ducks Unlimited so the whole area for the past few years is just bombarded with the Canada geese. They do a real number on the farmers fields in spring before moving on and they've gotten to the point where they just aren't afraid of animals or people chasing them out of buildings they just run at you and start to honk and flap those huge wings. l know a lot are shot around here but they just keep on coming. l think they need to put some kind of birth control in the lakes to keep numbers down. Did l mention they poop a lot real lots all over.

: l love to watch them come back in the spring flying over but wish they would land somewhere else further away.
