I know that sounds like an oxymoron

I am a little concerned and I have done a ton of internet searches and cant find a thing. I have a bred mare due to foal in April. We have noticed that her manure smells really foul starting about a week ago. Shes been dewormed, no feed changes, no stress and she is acting fine. eating good, playing good. Im going to go ahead and de worm her again. manure piles are normal. I went to feed this morning and she was just passing manure when i walked in. wow the smell is just terrible! Im going to put a call into the vet when they open but was wondering if anyone else ever had this happen

thanks

Kay

search under bacterial links this is a symptom my 34 year old mare had before her manure went to cow patties.

I have had a couple do this in times past..kinda let's me know....the nutritional needs needed to be upped. I never asked it just felt like the thing to do and the stink abated?

Hey Kay,

Please let us know what the vet has to say. I've gone out to feed and every once in a while I'll get a real bad wiff but can't tell who it was if someone was just passing gas or what. None of ours have had any loose stools and all are eatting well so I'm kinda baffled myself.

Maybe someone got a bad piece or broccolli or something.... :bgrin Just kidding

my reg vet wont be in until later in the afternoon and then will call. Ill let you know what he says

I was worried it might be bacterial. No temp so thats good

I just dont like it when anything changes so better safe then sorry right?

Sometimes my two girls poop would stink so bad, I always wondered why but all I could come up with is that they had lots of differnt kinds of wild berry bushes in there pasture and maybe were eating then.

We had a foal born in about 1981 or so that had a horrible infection inside- went off to the hospital at about 4 days old. His manure stank so bad, you could smell it from YARDS away and it didnt smell like any kind of manure at all. Was at the hospital for a week, IV's, antibiotics, etc.... had to switch to stronger ones as the first were not working..... He was doing much better, nursing and playing. He got to come home and was home 2 days- down he went again- worse this time. Back to the hospital (and yes his poop STANK again) and this time the antibiotics did not work- we lost him. Over 20 years later I can still imagine that rank smell- it was sickening. His poop was also yellow and stayed that way.

I would surely get your mare checked out, but does she have access to pasture and other bushes? Could she be eating something that has affected her poop? Hope it is nothing serious!!
