I was reading part of the AMHR Foundation Horse thread and I am confused.

What is foundation?

Is it a miniature that resembles the older type of Miniature from before the 80's vs. the sleek and refined style today?

Or is there some more detailed explanation that has nothing to do with conformation and everything to do with breeding and pedigree?

Foundation, to me, is what something was built on.

In my opinion, the miniature horse is still relatively new.

I am not sure the word "foundation" would've the best term.

If anything, I do like the different types that PtHA has...

ONLY MY OPNION!!!

If I hear foundation miniature... this is what I picture...

FOUNDATION VRS NOW body type...

I would think a solid bloodline of older names vrs names all over the map with hardly to none being the same.

The solid bay below's pedigree is short but full of all the same 3 prefixed names

The bay roan is longer with 11 diffirent prefixed names up close in her pedigree

That's what I was thinking as well, and may I say that I fancy the bay a lot more than the refined? I LOVE the chunky ones!

Would people be interested in posting some of their own foundation types if they have any?

Diane I love your Silverado, somthing about he reminds me so much of my Pallidon who I reckon walks the line of new type and old.

Spotty can come and live with me anytime

I didn't comment on the topic about AMHR doing a "foundation mini" only because I think alot of people may make a stink about adding more halter classes to an already big show bill, someone thinking those of us with thicker style minis, that I'll post pics of, are complaining about not winning against the slimmer looking ones, or not including Shetlands into the "foundation mini", the list could go on.

To me here's what I would consider the "older style/foundation" mini - both of these girls were born in 2005 with completely different older bloodlines:

What I consider my foundation boy:

He does have his HOF in halter- which he got 68 of his 70 points in 2003 as a three year old. Now he's just not competitive in halter, especially since he's 34.5" and must compete against the taller guys, most of which now ARE shetland bred.

But if you go by the "no hardship in four generations" he couldn't get a foundation seal, even though his great-grandsire is Iowa's Little Kernel, one of the miniatures that IS a foundation, his registration number is 472A!

Great question Tremor and I can understand why you were confused-that was part of the big debate in the other topic! Miniatures are different from other breeds like shetlands in that there really isn't a consistent foundation type. The beauty of the minis to me is that are so many different types because they are not technically a breed and anything under a certain height is considered one. My foundation horses are going to be different from many others, the same goes for each individual. I don't think of any certain type, I think of the horses that started the registries and helped shape the miniature horse 'breed' in the beginning. I think of horses that have papers that go back to those horses without having outcrosses from other breeds.

Field of Dreams-i have an Iowas Little Kernel son that is still producing for me-love seeing your boy, he is beautiful!

I just think a lot misunderstand what a Foundation division is. Whether its a foundation quarter horse or a foundation shetland it is supposed to be to preserve the type a breed started with.

And again too many confuse type with conformation. You can have an excellent quarter horse type mini with great conformation.

Up until a few years ago you could still find judges that placed these ahead of the more refined types. Heck I still remember the screaming that ensued a few years ago at an Ohio show when the judge was obviously picking all the QH type minis. It was fun to watch. LOL.

I only own one miniature that would fit a foundation division and shes for sale so I have no agenda. I just have always thought a foundation mini division would be good for members and good for the assoc as it would bring back many that stopped showing a few years ago. Believe it or not there are many that prefer those minis with the big strong quarter horse butts.

But really like I said previously what is needed first is for the mini to become a breed.

I guess the way I look at it is...Perhaps I am misunderstanding...so please don't flame

yes there are different body types of miniature's, refined and stockier. I guess my concern is if you were to specify that the foundation type has more bone( as was presented in the verbage of the other thread), that would put the more refined minis showing with the AMHR/ASPC cross horses.

Instead of changing AMHR, why not have a division for miniature Shetlands(AMHR/ASPC crosses)I don't know how to clarify my thought, I just hate to change the basis of what we have(kinda like press 1 for english) to incorporate crosses with Shetland.

And again, NOT putting Shetlands down. Some I have seen are incredible so please don't take offense as non is intended
