Is there any way to tell if a horse has foundered in the past (other than xrays)- there are no obvious signs at present like heat or lameness?? thank you

Other than x-rays, there is no guaranteed way.

Usually the white line will start to widen, hoof frequently has 'growth rings' and there will be more toe and less heal. But, at times a horse could have all of these signs and not be foundered, so be a little careful.
