I've tried to search for this but most of the discussions seemed to be based on people that sort of know what they're doing. This will be the first year I have ever bred my own mare. I'd like to participate in the futurity but I don't understand if you nominate in the breeding year or the foaling year. I even tried to read the forms on AMHR website and it's no clearer than mud to me.

What horses we bred last year, 2010 for this years 2011 resulting foals is what you nominate, so if you are breeding this year 2011, next year 2012 that is when you fill out the paperwork to nominate by March 1st deadline.

Thank you. Don't know why when I read some of the paperwork it's more like Greek!

In both registries you have to nominate prior to the foal being born for the halter futurities. So if you are breeding in 2011, in AMHA you would have had to nominate your stallion(s) and mare(s) prior to December 31st, 2011. They now only have a yearling futurity, so it would be 2013 before you show the foals from the 2011 nominated parents.

In AMHR You have until March 1st of the year the foal is born, in your case, 2012, to nominate the parents. Then you can show the resulting foal as a weanling, yearling, 2YO and 3YO. The foals must be "sustained" in order to show after their weanling year. This is an additional fee, rather like a class fee, to show at Nationals.

Thanks. My mare was futurity in AMHA when I bought her but no shows around here so it was wasted. Of course the mare and stallion are special to me (stallion was National driving Champ. and mare has state driving Champ and HOF in Obstacle). The offspring will be my first and one and only (probably) so I just have to put it in with AMHR and give it a try.

I don't think there are any futurity classes at local shows - it's just at Worlds or Nationals.

Good luck!

National area shows for aspc/amhr have futurity classes

You can win quite a bit especially with a gelding!

I have found though that so many have trouble figuring out the whole futurity thing that many do not sustain them once I sell them

I have to also say it took me forever to understand it LOL. I remember finally one day Lennie Bertrand called me and explained it over the phone and I finally got it

Ok now I have a question LOL, so the National Area Show futurity classes are for the horses that are being nominated for the Nationals Futurity??? Or how do you get into those futurities? Sorry if this is a dumb question!

Yes its the same futurity. Once you have nominated a stallion and mare the resulting foal can be entered in National area show futurity classes and Nationals or Congress.

Now having said that some areas also have their own futurity which is not the same as the "National futurity"

so for example

My foal Dale went to Illinois and we showed their national area show in Classic futurity yearling stallion. We then went on to show Classic Futurity stallion at Congress.
