I had my 3 yr old stallion gelded on Sat. I have him in a pasture to "get exercise" per the vet recommedations.........

Went to check him today and there is alot of swelling and some discharge.

How much swelling is normal?

So decided to ask here on the forum as there is alot of experience with this sorta thing.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried walking him at all? When my boys were gelded we took lots of walks down the road everyday for at least 15 minutes each walk. My bigger B size gelding I ponied behind a Quarter Pony mare on some short trail rides, he never did have much swelling. I found with my boys that even if I had them in a pasture they wouldn't want to exercise themselves due to the pain/discomfort so they needed to be walked to get exercise.

Forced light exercise, and you can run cold water on the area. I do it this with every gelding if there is swelling.. most generally the older the stallion the worse swelling..

I would run this by my vet and get his advice. Yes, light exercise is recommended, but swelling and discharge could mean infection. Is his temperature normal?

I hope it's nothing.

We just had our almost 8 yr old stallion gelded last week. My vet recommends 15-20 minutes of exercise ( round pen or lunging) followed by 15 minutes of cold water hosing for 10 days.

Swelling was at its worst three days post surgery, but now there is very little swelling and no discharge.

When I had my boy done my vet told me to Trot him 4 or 5 times a day (15 minutes each), so I did, he didnt swell at all. I was told you could hose them with cold water for swelling but I didnt need to do that with my guy...

The type of discharge makes a difference some blood dripping type of stuff is normal however I will say one of the boys we had done had closed back up hosing didnt really work and it was swollen and getting infected kinda puss like - I looked at it and realized it had closed and opened it back up with my finger (YUCK) then I was able to hose it out a bit with some light pressure and he was fine after that (and some antibiodics per the vet)

I have gelded 4 in the last 2-3 yrs. My vets instructions were to make him run on a lunge line or round pen at least 20 min two to three times a day for I think 10 days.

This kept the area draining instead of collecting the discharge. If it was swollen, flushing the area with cold water from a hose, but I never had to do that as long as I kept them moving. The first 24 hrs were stall rest too.

What kind of discharge? Does he have a fever? How is his appetite?

I hope he is doing better!

Tux and I went for a long walk (good for me too) and also lunged him in the round pen.

And then ran cold water (burr) on his "area" for 10 minutes or so!
