I have a question on roans...is it possible for a black sire to produce a blue roan foal out of a grulla mare...mare is out of a dun and a silver dapple...I am thinking one parent HAS to be a roan to produce a roan...but not 100% sure

here are some pictures of the colt..I was under the impression he was black untill I clipped a spot on his rear end and saw all the white hairs..

yes his mother is a grulla appaloosa ..but the colt shows no appy traits, no mottling and has black hooves

To have a true roan one parent must be roan however there are other versions of visual roaning such as sabino and appaloosa. Do the parents have white on them? Do you have pictures of the parents and the foal?

Why do you think the foal is Roan??

IME btw, Black Dun can easily hide Roan.

I do not see Roan in the foal at all. At least one parent MUST be Roan in order to have a Roan foal. I can't see if the foal has a dorsal mark or not, but looks like Grullo MIGHT be a possibility, and Appy can do some VERY strange things in my opinion.

I thought he was a black untill he was clipped...his whole body is covered with a mix of white hairs...may be hard to see in the picture...I do know he is not a grullo/black dun as grullo's do not have a mixture of white and coat color hairs....as would a sabino/roan or appy ...and he has no dorsal... noone knew the mare was in foal when I bought her..was only when she showed no heat that questions were raised..... there is a possibility the mare could also have been covered by a blue roan, which is where I am leaning towards..but wanted to make sure roan had to come from roan....I am glad I clipped him tho vs possibly selling him with the wrong Sire.......

I would certainly say he not a BLUE roan. We have about 6 blue roans & he looks nothing like them at all.
