Are you good with your hands/crafting? I'm sure the Martha Stewart website would have tons of ideas.

Something personalized with new baby's name. There are many places that offer monogrammed, painted etc things of all kinds.Something not necessary, but kind of fun.

A special quilt for the baby......Our Bri is 13 but we still have a couple of special blankets we treasure. One she likes to keep in her room and the other we keep in the livingroom, but both are being used as Throws.

How much money you got??? Cause I can give you a list a mile long.

I would decorate a nice wicker laundry basket and fill it with Dreft Baby Laundry Detergent, Baby Wipes, Baby Powder, Baby Lotion, Diapers, Onesies, and things that are a must have like this that they will run out of fast. Babies never have enough clothes so buy an assortment not just newborn but for later on. I had a special dresser that was full of baby clothes for the future. Then a special gift such as if you could get a baby blanket embroidered quickly enough with the baby's name, something personalized would be an added touch. My mom got my boys these decorator plates to hang in the nursery with their names on them, I still have them, they were beautiful. And also what about a Baby Book?

thanks guys some great ideals.

Saw you are from Canada. We have alot of friends near Burlington. Maybe a little hockey stick and some little ice skates with his name on them. We did that for one of our friends there. (Assuming they like hockey).

I got a TON of babywash, shampoo, lotion, etc as gifts. Unfortunately my son is sensitive and has to use specific products. My best gift for my shower was a basket filled with items for myself and the baby. A good family friend/mother of 3 kids (two are under 3) put it together for me. Later she told me that she tried to get me some things that she didnt know she would need when she had her first, but that other people usually dont give. Some of the items included a tube of vaseline for my sons healing circumcison, now used to lubricate his thermometor, Packets of herbal sitz bath for me, alcohol for the umbilical stump, mylicon drops, infant tylenol, lanolin ointment, milk storage bags, breast pads, one playtex drop in bottle, aveeno baby wash, unscented CJs BUTTer and a box of baking soda for diaper rashes, a package of newborn disposable diapers and wipes, infant hangers (were great for all the outfits others got him as gifts), a bottle of infant laundry soap, cotton balls, infant Q tips, a breastfeeding bracelet to remind when he last ate and on what side, and a stuffed teddy bear. There was some other stuff as well, but thats what I can remember off the top of my head. All of the stuff was crammed into a wicker laundry basket, and had clear cellophane around it, with ribbons on it that match my nursery.

Well if it were me, I wouldnt want half of the suggestions. I would want something practical that I could use........diapers, wipes, bath stuff....that kind of thing. I know when new babies are born everybody wants to get something extra special and fancy, but really mom want stuff that can help. There is nothing more of a relief then to know you have a stock of diapers and necessary things that makes the cost add up fast.

I say skip the blankt, the plate, then what not and get the basics. You wouldnt beleive how grateful that makes people.

And always get everything in the sensitive formula

Oh and at least here doctors advise to not do anything with the cord. Let it dry up and fall off on its own. Alcohol and all the other stuff actually makes it take longer and gets into their system which is not healthy.
