I have noticed that when my GP mix goes out and means business with intruders she makes a breathy sound in her throat besides barking like she is going to eat someone or thing. When the cat that tried to move in to our house started to get into things like bread, butter and cereal we told Brandy that that cat does not belong and as soon as that cat hits the door Brandy is on the situation and makes her leave. We have 7 other cats and she lets everyone of them come in and eat or nap. She only stops that one. But it is the sound that I am wondering about. She did the same noise when something got into the chickens last night. Oh yeah, she also comes and gets me to show me she took care of the problem.

Maybe a type of growl?

At least you can determine a serious bark from other barks.

I have been watching Brandy and when she plays. I have also payed attention to how I play with her. I got her when she was 6 weeks old and she does take a lot of her ques from me. I noticed I make breath sounds in my throat when I am advancing toward her. I think she is just mimicking what I do when I play with her.
