Joey, I am so sorry for your loss. I think most of us have lost foals at one time or another. I have one that I am watching now that choked today..but I am pretty sure that he will make it. Ask questions and do research there is no stupid question just ask. I have learned more from the forums and horse friends than I ever learned from my Vet. My Vet is not a bad Vet...he just doesn't have much use for Minis. But I think there are a lot of Vets out there that don't understand that minis are different that big horses. In all fairness I know there are many Vets that are great with minis. Maybe you can find one that is more familar with our little ones.

So sorry for your loss - breeding can have such rewards - but when things go bad it is so heartbreaking. My prayers and thoughts are with you during your time of sorrow.

Joey, my heart just breaks for you in the loss of your filly. We had the exact situation with our first ever foal (except the outcome was better). I spent so much time with them right at the beginning, and I was positive that the baby was nursing. She seemed perfectly normal the first 24 hours, but then started getting weak and obviously not feeling well. I had the vet out right away, and he pulled blood for the IgG (antibodies) test on the baby. He also determined that the mare's milk had not come in (she was a maiden) so, obviously the filly wasn't getting the colostrum. A couple of hours later, the vet phoned and said that the baby would need a transfusion in order to save her, which he did at 36 hours of age. He also treated the mare with whatever she needed to bring her milk on. I still had to supplement the baby with foal formula though several times each day and gradually tapering off over the next few weeks.

After that, we started having IgG tests done routinely. Thank God we never had that problem again.

Please try not to be too hard on yourself. It was an honest mistake and heaven knows you took all the right steps to correct the situation when you knew about it. Too bad your vet didn't seem a little more on the ball

the vet shouldn't have gave her a enema...my baby mona lisa wasn't pooping a day ago and we was going to give her one but our vet said the enema would mess up her organs. best to keep her on grass. but i'm sorry for your baby. -hugs-
