I get my shaving delivered by a dump truck to our shaving bin. The shaving bin does have three sides but I loose almost half with the winds that blow around here. Someone was telling me about "grinding" which is suppose to be the finely chipped up bark of the tree instead of the soft inside? It suppose to not blow away as much and have less dust problems. I am open about the ideal but would like some feed back from anyone that has used grindings.

Much appreciated.

Have you tried attaching a tarp to your bin?

Simple to do!

Yep! Tarped, tied and weighed down. Still loose shavings

annoying isn't it?

Now I buy my shavings by the bail

I save a lot of waste and money that way

Pleeeeease don't bed your stalls with grindings !

The barn where I board my horses received a load of them and they literally stabbed my horses when they would lie down.

The points are so sharp on the grindings they come right through your shoe and into your foot.

Please believe me when I say they are every bit as sharp as a nail.

I had two vets check the "marks" on my horses and they could not figure out what they were - we switched to bagged shavings and the "marks" healed !!!

Yes, grindings are less dusty ( almost no dust at all ) and I would assume they would be cheaper but I guarantee if you someone were to put a small amount in your hand you would NOT order a truck load of them.

Are you able to use sawdust (which is from the tree, not the bark)? That is what we have always used here and it works great and is easy to clean. We have it in all our stalls and all the run in sheds.

I have used grindings for years with no problems.

I don't know where your barn gets its grindings from Justine, but I have NEVER had anything sharp and stabby.

The barn where my boys are at right now uses ground cardboard. They are VERY absorbant!

Speaking of shavings, what is everyone paying per bale now?
