I am so excited, today I took my first driving lesson and learned about the harness and how to put it on. My lesson was on a standardbred on the training track at the Saratoga Race Track. My son was my instructor and he used a bridle called a happy bridle because there was no side or overcheck. I looked at everyone else out jogging and most of the others were using the same type of bridle. We used a jog cart with a double seat. Can't wait until next weekend for my next lesson. Hopefully I won't feel so in the way of the others and take the reins!

Well, I never heard the term "happy bridle" but those of us that show in American Driving Society (ADS) events like CDEs and Pleasure Driving Shows tend to use bridles without any check. Overchecks are never allowed in ADS events (to my knowledge) and side checks are only allowed at the "entry" level.

Sounds like you are already hooked! You might want to look into the Saratoga Driving Society. They are having an ADS Driving Show on August 7 that you might want to attend, and if you do, please look for us - a black and white VSE.

It is in Lindenwald, NY.. There is a class list on the Saratoga Driving Association website but there is more info on the American Driving Society website under "Omnibus" which lists all the ADS events. (Google, them - that is what I do to find websites). Hope you can make it!

I guess it is called the happy bridle because the horses like it, the one I had enjoys sight seeing the houses across the street. It is a good thing he is non-spooky. I will check out where Lindinwald is,

Hi guys...the show is actually at Lindenwald, which was the home of Pres Van Buren. It is located in Kinderhook NY. I am a member of Saratoga Driving Association and will be there working at the show all day.

It is a lovely show. Lucky seven, if you can make it to the show, I think you'd have a nice time. It is a beautiful setting and wonderful horses.
