Has anyone on the forum used Cisplatin (a type of chemotherapy drug) to treat cancer and if so, what were the results/side effects that you experienced?

Gracie (avatar) has squamous cell carcinoma that has spread through her face (soft tissue and bone). My vets have had success with the drug in treating this type of cancer when it's on the skin, but we don't know whether or not it would be effective once the cancer has gone into the soft tissue/bone. I have a call into the surgeon at the hospital I use to see what they know.

Curious to see if anyone here has experience with this drug.

Thank you -

Liz R.

Actually in Cindy's retired cutting gelding "Sandman" we had cancerous growth in his sheath.

It seemed to come up overnight and really was swollen and terrible looking.

I fiqured that he was a goner, but Greg our vet told us about some pretty good results that folks in Florida had using Cisplatin on race horses.

It was pretty pricey, but Cindy agreed to give it a shot and after about 30 days of treatment. He looked to be back to normal. That was 6 years ago and so far we have had no more problems.

Hope it works for your girl as well as it did for "Sandman".

Yes, It was one of the drugs I have been on. It worked for me, I was very tired, my potassium levels dropped and I had heart arythmia and many days where I could not walk, or stay awake. If I stood up I hit the floor. But I am here.

I don't know if there is any science to this, but I am always worried when it will rear it's ugly head again, as I am going through another bout now.

Good luck to you and your little baby. I will have you in my heart.

Thank you --- this does sound encouraging and from what I'm reading, there are some good results even when the cancer has spread into the soft tissue. I think it's worth a try... I will keep you posted on the results.

Thanks again,

LIz R.
