Our next show is about 2 hrs away (Evergreen Mini Spectacular in Spanaway), with all of our classes in a single day. While I would prefer to stay over, Keith has to be back the next day, so we'll be hauling in, and using a mini trailer as transport and stall.

Do you or have you shown from your trailer? What have you found works best to keep your horse relaxed and happy? Any thoughts on this?

I plan on lunging him when we get there and giving him a long walk (his first class isn't until early afternoon).

Susanne-

Who are you taking to the show? Just Mingus? Or is Flash going too?

Tell Daryl he needs to come let everyone know how his little filly, along with the others, are doing lately. PICTURES would be nice of all the horses! :bgrin :bgrin :bgrin

We always show out of our trailer. We have a Wells Cargo and the dividers are removable. I take one out and give my mare the two to roam around in. Hook up her water in there and plenty of hay. She seems very happy. Yesterday with the hot weather we just put wet towels on her after her halter classes.

Thanks everyone! This is reassuring...and Karla, those fillies are just too cute!

Erin, for this show we're just taking Mingus, since we can just be there the one day, but Flash is getting ready for his big debut at the Columbia County Fair and then the Oregon State Fair...plus I'm hoping to take at least one of them to Central Point...

BTW...Mingus is now JUMPING beautifully and enthusiastically, so hopefully we'll be ready by state fair time...

and we have a new twist for Liberty...

I always showed my big horse out of a trailer and when we're at Happ's Kody only uses the barn at night. For a show I find haybags work wonders. Stash one on the side of the trailer, tie them loosely enough to relax without being endangered and plop down in a lawn chair. If we were going to leave the trailer to spectate we either left one person behind with the horse and took turns or took the horse with us. Really, once we got to the kind of large show with only a class a day we got a stall because it was just easier. When I was showing out of the trailer it was 4-H shows where we were doing 13 classes in one day and the only time we tied him up was at lunch break or when I needed to change clothes. He was usually so grateful for the break he'd simply stand and eat! LOL

At the CDE's there are enough neighbors around at all times with their own horses for me to simply ask someone to keep an eye on him for me. Kody was (sadly) taught to tie out all day long at his previous home so while it's unfortunate he grew up on a lead, at least I can stake him out like a dog and not worry that he will hurt himself. I don't like sticking my mini in my trailer like a stall because he can't see out and there isn't much of a breeze in hot weather, but I guess that's what I'd do if I had to leave him at a show and didn't have a stall. Be careful the trailer is absolutely empty though! No mangers, no dividers, no NOTHING to get caught on. Maybe some loose hay on the ground and a water bucket secured somewhere. I don't trust these little guys not to get into trouble unsupervised.

I'm so disappointed you won't be staying! I asked to be stabled by you.

Oh well. At least I'll get to meet you and Mingus.

#1 tip for success: friends at the show! *LOL*

hauling in or not, if you need anything, let us know. We could always evict the show stuff and give Mingus some time in a stall if he needs it or however you want to work it. I think as long as he's comfortable being tied, he should be fine no matter what. Which day are you coming?

Look us up!!

:D

I wanted to bring Lailah and Bella but I dont' think I'll have room or time w/all the others; Kyan, Mouse, Lark. Granted, Kyan is sans mama these days, but it will stilll be a full trailer w/out the little princess and "queen b" on there as they would really make things touchy. *LOL*

I'm excited to see you there!

Liz

They should do fine in the trailer and going for walks, or tied outside the trailer for a change of scenery.

I most always showed out of my trailer unless it was a 2 day show and they had stalls.

Leia, I'm sorry, too, that we won't be staying overnight...it would be so fun to hang out longer, but at least we get to go, get to meet you and Kody in person finally, and get into trouble with the McMaster/Crabby Chicken contingent! I suppose I could let Keith and Daryl take Mingus home, but then I'd have to hitchhike back to Portland!

I'm hoping I at least have time to visit the Prime Design booth and buy or order Mingus' long promised Shetland-style halter...

After having to miss the Oregon Gold Show and the Cavalcade of Ponies, I'm thrilled to finally make it to a show this year (other than schooling and open shows)!

(We'll have to save the wild party for the coast driving weekend...)

Thanks, Liz!

I posted that last message before seeing yours...

We'll be there early Friday morning for measuring in, showing in assorted halter classes in the afternoon, and staying through Liberty, the last class of the day/evening. I wish we could meet Bella, and I always love seeing Lailah, even if she is the "Queen B"...

I KNOW that Mingus will love it if we take him with us everywhere...he only uses his stall at shows to roll and poop, and thinks he should be with us at all times.

I imagine we'll be fine...so long as it isn't rainy or too hot (like today!) He's really good at standing tied.

Which weekend is that show?? (it seems odd to me that I never know what the show weekends are anymore, since when I did show, I planned everything else around the show weekends!)

Who, Kody? The holy terror? Yes, you can not only meet him you can watch us fumble our way through two obstacle driving classes. I still find it supremely amusing that I can do intricate dressage tests with him but can't manage to drive over a pole when asked to.

: About the only thing we do well in obstacle driving is going over bridges or other scary objects! Kody excels at that, the fearless horse. I still cream hazards and cones on a regular basis too so I've definitely got to work on my steering.

I'm excited that I'll get to see Mingus do his classes. Even if I miss halter while prepping for my own classes, I will watch him in liberty or die trying. Finally! LOL.

Do you want me to bring the Hyperbike for you to sit in and try out? It fits easily in my trailer tack room even fully assembled so it would be no problem.

We go to all kinds of 1 day shows and I agree with everyone-haybags are WONDERFUL

: All our horses are happy just standing in the trailer eating their hay until they have to show. We open all the trailer windows and leave the back doors open, so it's actually alot cooler in the trailer then outside. I also have it set up that each horse has their own water bucket hung in the trailer. When we trucked the weanlings to their first show, we made them a box stall in the trailer. They were very happy with this set up and were VERY quiet all day munching on hay. If you just have 1 horse going, sometimes it's easy just to make them a box stall in the trailer with hay and a water bucket.

Good luck at the show and have fun :aktion033:

Linda, The Evergreen show is July 7-9, in Spanaway (near Tacoma). You should come!

Leia, That would be cool to check out your hyperbike. While I drove Liz's a few years back, Keith has only seen photos, and I know that once he sits in it he'll move mountains to get one... (There IS a method to my madness...bwahaha!!)

But only if it really is no trouble for you...I know you'll have plenty to do and I don't want to trouble you..

Susanne, the Hyperbike is by far the easiest of my vehicles to pack and include. It's the only one I don't have to use a ramp for! LOL. It will be no trouble and I'd be happy to bring it. I'll have to loosen up a stirrup for Keith so he can see how it really rides- I suspect where they are for me will be a bit short for him! :new_shocked:
default_wacko.png
: I'll move them both if he'll promise to help me put them back where they started. It's sort of a two person job to get it right.

Darn it....I will be down in Lincoln City that weekend (at least one of those days anyway...) but can't say why yet...That's a "secret" for later (no, not horse related...lol)

Good luck to all!! :aktion033:

Susanne, do you have some kind of portable panels to take with you? You could make a pen off your trailer.

And having no dividers up inside the trailer until travel time....... Also, extension cord(s) with small fan(s) for inside the trailer if it's a hot day.

Giving Mingus (and who ever else you are bringing?) a half dozen or more small hay meals throughout the day will keep them occupied. It's just adjusting the timing of the meals around class times that you need to watch!

Have done all of the above -- worked out fine.....

MA

Thanks, Maryann -- Good suggestions!

I'll have to see what I can come up with as far as a pen -- someone needs to invent a portable pen that is like those pools that automatically rise up when you fill with water -- only this portable corral would stand up when filled with horses!

I do feed lots of "mini" meals of hay at shows, and it works well with him. The timing of our classes coordinates well with our normal feeding times which is lucky (and rare!)

Thanks everyone for your input and encouragement!

My center divider comes out- it is a regular two horse trailer for full sized. I put bedding in there, just like I would the stall, and a water bucket as well and that becomes the stall for the day. It is nice as he is in the total shade all day, plus I open the little window in front and so any breeze can blow through. It actually stays pretty nice in there!

I know someone on here even mentioned they had a mister setup, but if you live where it is really humid anyhow, this may not work well.
