One of my mares, maiden mare...ultrasounded in October..

should have been about 90 days in foal, vet said definately open.

Two months later.. she sure looks in foal to me!

I have not felt any movement yet..

Has this ever happened to you?

~Sandy

YES! This has happened to us. Our mare was ultra-sounded as 'open,' but she never came back in heat. As winter progressed, she was showing signs that she was, indeed, bred. And she produced a lovely colt! So it can happen!

Good time to use Wee Foal to find out for sure... After I sweated through a false pregnancy I use this whenever I am in doubt. The mare with the false pregnancy had Ultrasounded IN FOAL and went through all the stages... except actual labor. Wee Foal (the 120 day one anyway) won't give you a positive if it is a false pregnancy.

Yes, twice! The external ultrasound can show some readings that are intrepeted as "open".

Over several different years with two mares we've had the negative readings, and both went on to successful pregnancies and births. Back when we were young and ignorant, we had a mare ultrasounded at about three months with a negative reading, then as she progressed, we had her done at six months, also negative. She foaled at 311 days after her last breeding! Now that we're old and knowledgeable.....Ha!..................we don't rely on the ultrasound, and the vet's intrepretation of the reading.............but on our own observation of the signs of pregnancy.

I've had them be wrong both ways, vet saying open and/or in foal. And that's both with external and internal US.

I don't even bother paying for it anymore.

Yes... bought a mare that I was told had U.S. twice and wasn't in foal. But she was... figured that a couple of months after I had her at my place. Had a very nice Silver Bay Appy colt.

I've never had it happen, but an ultrasound is only as accurate as the vet doing the ultrasound. So far, when my vet says a mare is open, she's been right.

I have friends that have had it happen. With I vet I don't use. I am very fortunate to have an Equine speacialist who is within 45min of my farm. He is always on, or least

has been so far. Would be nice if he was wrong on lady , but somehow I doubt he is. Next yearill be her year. !

It happened to me a few years ago. A mare who was always too fat was ultrasounded and confirmed "definitely open." She was one of those that never showed as in season, so the vet gave her a shot to bring her in so we could breed her. The next morning, there was an aborted fetus in the stall with her, probably 6 months along.

My mare was ultrasounded as open, a couple wks later she aborted about a 7 month fetus. When I told the vet, his only comment was that next time he'll have to try harder.

You have to be kidding me!

I would be getting a new vet, filing a complaint with the state board and would never promote him/her again.

Our vet has missed one time....(hopefully twice this year - lol) and she told us a mare was open, but the mare was actually in foal when we sold her. So, yes, we've experienced that.

I read the U.S. right next to the vet. I know what I saw and didn't see. The vet really tried to get a better view of the foal but it kept moving. The mare that is due next, I saw that one too. The mare that is supposed to be open, She did have some fluid. The vet was not concerned she said it was most likely from an abotred fetus. I hope she wasn't hiding something. If she is she is gonna have a very small foal because she would be due no later than March. With her last pregnancy she was as big as a house by now.

We had 6 ultra-sounded one year and was told that 5 were in foal and one wasn't. The one that was as "not in foal" duly produced a nice filly in the month all her friends did.

We called the filly "Heidi"

We have had one experience in that a mare was internal ultra-sound as open - and then in the spring foaled a pretty filly.

Thanks everybody.

I really think she is in foal. She is a very refined mare...

and is just "Fat" but she's not Fat all over.....

just in the middle. We'll see. The ultrasound was internal, and

this vet is not very experienced, according to her. She said Derby

had nothing oing on in there, no nothing.

Yes, we have had it happen too.

We had a mare, who was headed for her 2nd foal. Our vet ultrasounded her in October 2007 and said she he wasn't sure but didn't think she was in foal. Came back in December because we wanted her checked again and said that she was open. I moved her into the show barn and was going to start excercising her, but wanted one more ultrasound just to make sure. Third time was a charm because there was a foal in that belly!

Happy holidays!
