My B size Mini Canyon and my Welsh Pony mare are the same size (4") for a bit, and I tried a regular snaffle in the past for my mini and she didn't like it, so I'm thinking a french link would be better for the smaller mouths, but where do you find the small size bits? I'm finding lots of 4.5", but that's not what I need...I am looking for both a driving and non-driving bit.

Oops, sorry, mea culpa.

I've gotten a nice one at Iowa Valley Carriage. Excellent bit quality and selection there.

You can also place a "Wanted" ad here on the Saleboard, you never know if someone wants to go through their bits and sell used ones.

Just for Ponies has a great selection of smaller size bits. That is where I bought my Welsh filly's 4" loose ring french link. I do like Iowa Valley as well.

Our horses are hooked on the french link copper snaffles. The only place that I have found the smaller ones that our horses like is from Diane at MiniExpress.

I second checking with Diane at MiniExpress. All my driving horse use a copper french link and I have them in sizes from 3.25" to 4.5". Diane always has what I'm looking for.

HorseLoverz has 4" DRing french links for around $25 and so does Dover.

Looks like Just For Ponies has the best price for $19 for the DRing French Links ;)

Hope this helps!

As I mentioned in my private message, I love Iowa Valley Carriage's bits. They are beautifully made, are no-pinch, and have smaller links than many of the jointed bits I've seen. In addition, the service is outstanding and they know their products. Perhaps not the cheapest, but worth every penny.

If you don't mind a bit that has bulges on the mouthpiece, the one seller mentioned several times has a great selection of bits. If you're like me & don't want mouthpiece bulges, then I recommend looking carefully at photos of the offered bits before ordering. Many people don't seem to care but for my part I like a nice smooth mouthpiece. If a a mouthpiece has bulgest on the bars, the pressure created by rein usage is concentrated on the area of the mouth under those bulges. I want a bit to create a nice uniform pressure across the mouth when I use the reins--I do not want the pressure to be concentrated in two small spots, which is what happens when a bit has a bulge on each side of the joint.

I have the copper mouth french link bits from Mini Express and am very pleased with them--no bulges on the Mini Express bits! I believe they are available in 4" size. Diane also has some stainless steel french link bits with a copper link. I am going to order a couple of these for those horses I have that tend to grind their teeth on the bit once in awhile--I haven't seen these bits but have been told by someone else (who knows about bits and whose judgment I trust) that they are nicely made.

Thanks so much!! I knew I would get good info from the folks here!

Thanks Minimor, I am also picky about bits, so thank-you very much for that info! It's nice to get that info when you can't feel and see the bits other than photos.
